I'm a patient man, but ****

I'm in London. The store isn't a L+M. However, I told them that the L+M in Cambridge had a Fender AM Std. Precision in stock and asked him if they could grab it from them. He said he would look into it and get back to me... Get back to me, yeah, I've been gotten back to every week to be told "oh, it'll ship in another week."

There's no way a non-L+M related store could get a bass from L+M. You are getting smoke blown up your butt. I'd tell them I want my money back and just go to L+M and buy the bass. If they don't have the color you want in stock they can get it fast, be it getting it from another store or ordering it in.

And don't let them give you any crap if you ask for your money back either. They clearly dropped the ball on this one.

Thank you. Then again, are you aware about how much they could deduct from the $600 trade in?

I wouldn't think they'd have grounds to take any money from you, unless the trade in credit they gave you is higher than the amount they'd buy the sterling from you at. Did you return the Sterling then flip your return money into the deposit on the Fender, or trade the Sterling towards the Fender?

I'd say it's a matter of how much complaining you want to do at this point. I'd ask to see an order confirmation from Fender that your bass was ordered in December (though I suspect you paying for the bass in full in December just made for a nice Christmas at the store owner's home and he ordered the bass after the holidays). ;)

How far up the rope do you want to climb? As someone else suggested, I'd contact Fender if the store won't give you satisfaction. I'd want to hear it from Fender that they screwed up the order. I'm dubious they were the ones who screwed up.

Also, was this a U.S. Sterling bass, and you only got $600 trade in for it? Is the Sterling still at the store?

What I did was trade in a guitar (Fender Road Worn Stratocaster) for $500 credit, and paid ~ $900 cash towards an American MusicMan Sterling. Unsatisfied with the Sterling, I returned a week later and told them that I would like to order the Fender. And so the deal was that I would get the Fender for $1,200 - $500 credit from the guitar, for a total of $700 + tax, leaving me with around $100 of store credit. From there, I decided to order the Bass VT. Later on, I decided to get rid of a pedal and got $90 for it.

So all in all, I have around $1,500 in credit.

As far as how far I'm willing to go, well I want my money back. Friday, I want to go to Cambridge, get the damn P bass once and for all and possibly the Bass VT if they have it in stock.

At this point you might as well wait it out, getting your money back may take some time and may also be a pain all over again with them, sorry abou your situation but NEVER EVER pay in full unless you are leaving with the product. Always and I mean always keep them hungry for that money, that's the only way they will get to doing anything and fast when they want payment in full. Think about it they got paid so who "Really" cares when it arrives only you cause you paid them. I never like to tie up my money with music stores once they have your dough u are at their mercy. You should have just used the credit they gave you as a deposit and thats it, when the P arrived then give them the rest... By the way you are gonna love that P I tried one out and loved it. Either way good luck and again sorry for this misfortune but hopefully you get it worked out.

The trade in's might be dicey. I wouldn't lose money trying to get out of the deal. Are the pedal and Strat still at the store? You could trade those to L+M just as easily I would expect.

If you don't think you can walk away and not lose $$ on the trade ins I'd start complaining more, try to get your order rushed. There's no reason for this delay. I'd complain to Fender too, maybe they'd like to know they have a dealer that's being questionable. Maybe the dealer is innocent in all this (though it sounds unlikely) and Fender is to blame. At least if you talk to some people you could get some answers and hopefully try to get some compensation or satisfaction for this bs.

You could try canceling just the VT bass pedal order to test the waters too. See how they deal with it.

Find out what the store's policy is on trade-ins too (ie. do they give the same in credit as they do cash), without tipping your hand as to why you're asking.

Ivan might be right that waiting might be the best solution at this point too. Investigate what your options are. If you can walk away without losing $$ do it, if not you may have to tough it out.

I don't think I can walk away without losing any money. Getting the guitar and pedal back would just be problematic since I don't have a vehicle and the L+M is an hour and a half away from here, in a town that I've never been into. I think $500 was decent enough for a guitar that is worth $900 new. For some reason, they told me the MXR Blow Torch I traded in retails at $225, and thus gave me $90...

I sent an email to Fender... we'll see how it goes from there.

To me it sounds like someone's dropping the ball at that store. Fender has zero wait time on standard production model basses so if that store isn't getting it from whomever they usually go through, and you've paid in full, they should have went elsewhere. Same for the VT Bass pedal.

I doubt that the music shop is at fault here. My local fender dealer in town is probably moves more fender and instruments for that matter than any other shop in the state of Montana (don't laugh too hard, yes I said Montana) and he told me when I went to order a bass through him to try elsewhere because he had been waiting for over three months american fender basses he had ordered in. He told me that Fender had to switch paint manufacturers and ever since then they have been super slow to get things out. I appreciated his honesty.

It's a B.S. excuse. Dude...Fender puts out thousands of basses every year. They aren't back-ordered. They don't have "paint issues". They don't build to order...they mass-produce basses and stock warehouses with them. All that has to happen is dealer X calls or emails their Fender rep an order. That order is pulled and shipped to dealer X, who then turns around and hands you a Fender bass in exchange for your money. You're getting screwed by the store. It's blatantly obvious by the amount of excuses they've cooked up.

But why would the store even want to screw me? It's not like it's at their advantage... I wasn't even being picky - I want a Fender American Standard Precision Standard in 3 tone sunburst or olympic white with a rosewood fretboard.

I sent an email to Fender, let's see what they have to say.

Edit: Seriously, what do they expect? I change my mind and grab one of their in stock basses? Won't happen. The only other bass I'd be interested are Fender Marcus Miller, or Lakland Jazzes - they are not a Lakland dealer, and don't have the MM in stock.

Uhm, maybe they needed to meet payroll or fund new inventory? Get Fender on the phone ASAP.
