I just recieved a stringed instrument for christmas from santa, but it only has 4 strings? I thought basses have 6 strings, so is it a bass or guitar! where am i!!

The most common bass configuration is 4 strings. But 5, 6, 7, and even more string basses are becoming more common everyday.
My advice is to start on a 4 string. If you find you're gifted you can work your way up to more strings, should you so desire.
Most of the most famous bass players still play 4 string basses. I'm not very good, so I sure don't need more strings to mess up on!

That's a Lite Bass. You know, it sounds good but doesn't fill you up. If you're going to be playing all night, a Lite Bass is the way to go. Otherwise, man-up and get a fiver.
Suggesting that someone who plays more strings is gifted is just plain silly.
People don't graduate to more strings. This kind of statement is thrown around all the time here, and it is just plain dumb.
If that's what I'd meant you'd have a case. But I only meant to suggest that 4 is a good place to start, and then progress from there. Knowing my own skill level I plan to stay with 4.
But as per above, theis guys is just (sucessfully) yanking my chain.
Exactly. One could argue that most of us manage perfectly well with just the four strings.
