I think 99% of the trepidation men have is merely psychological.
sure was for me. my second kid is 10. i had put it off the whole time till last september. i was dead set against electing to cut up my body and was willing to wear a wetsuit (jimmy?) to stay whole.
that changed when my marriage fell apart. i found myself motivated to not have to deal with birth control anymore. i now know there was no reason to wait.
the procedure was a real challenge for me. i am big on mind-over-matter and staying calm in a storm, but i was shaking the whole time. i was taking deep breaths and at one point the doc told me he thought i might hyperventilate if i didn't slow down. i was actually surprised that i could not settle in, but i managed to make some jokes and keep a conversation up. the soldering iron helped with the humor, but it was kinda weird to see smoke.
and yes, the nurse (female) shaved me like a pro (which makes sense i guess).
i do not recommend driving yourself home.
and a big +1 to staying on your butt for 2 days. i used ice the first day and one vicadin that nite. after that, it was just some funny feelings on one side for a week maybe. it all worked out fine and now i think there was no need for me to be a wimp.
definitely go back for the sperm counts. one thing i did not like was that the doc told me the standard 6 weeks and 16 tube clearings. i think they say that to make it sound quick. obviously, everyone is different, but me and my gf got to planning for a 2 month range. it took me 5 months and over 60 events to get clear. i will admit, it was a fun time "clearing me out." we gave each one a name, went thru the alphabet twice, then it started to get old. i got on a first name basis with the staff as i went back over and over for checks.
oh, and while it made the staff laugh when i asked to keep the two little pieces of tube, i was serious. and they would not let me. bummed me out. i still have the knot that was in my daughter's umbilical chord, as well as both kids' baby teeth. i like that stuff.
