Considering that Scotland is about 300 miles further north, the days are even shorter than that.
Couple of things to consider: Do you have a one way ticket or is it round trip? Showing up on a one-way ticket is a big red flag to them.
When you land in the UK, the officials at the airport will want to know your plans. They will ask you where you are going to stay and how long you plan to be in the country. If you have a one way ticket and don't know where you're going to stay or how long, they may refuse you entry. They will also want to know how much money you have and you may have to prove it. In the end, you could be deported back to Australia if you don't answer their questions satisfactorily.
You may be thinking, "but I'm an Aussie, not a Turk!" It doesn't matter where you're from. You need to show vacation plans and prove you have enough money to carry out those plans. You have been warned.

It will be a cold snowy winter this year, but hopefully you'll have moved on from Scotland by the time this kicks in
Though that probably only means it's going to be on par with an average Canadian/Central Europe winter!
4 inches of snow and -4c(25f) here is enough for the media to start calling it the apocalypse, and the country to come to a stand still
That's it? I walk out in -4 in a spring jacket to go to the bus. This morning it was -25 or lower.

I had Norwegian friends at University that would comment on the cold. It isn't cold, objectively speaking but it feels colder because there is always an inordinate amount of moisture in the air, chilling your bones...

I went to Scotland this summer! I loved the people, Glasgow was tied for my favorite place on earth with Paris. If you go to Glasgow go to main drag (I'm l'm blanking on the proper main, but they say it as "sucky-hole") drink and enjoy the pub food and the people.
If you go to Ireland visit Cork and the English market, and Dublin and see Newgrange! In Paris do the Catacombs!

Now that makes much more sense to me. I'm high up near mountains, pretty dry here...
You're too late for the German Oktoberfests. I'd wait till spring and then go to some sub-tropic isles like Madeira and Krete. Not expensive, warm and sunny and some culture.
It's been a really nice weekend, much milder than it was during the week (no BS), you must have brought some of the nice weather with you.

The weather forecast looks quite reasonable for this time of year. Are you just going to hang out in town for the weekend?
Yeah I wouldn't mind giving it a go, I've tried Irn Bru, surprisingly nice, can't drink it very fast though, I don't think it would be good with booze.
I found some vegemite as well, none of this marmite crap

If you are planning on going further north, how are you planning on travelling? Not that the weather is likely to get that bad, but it's a lot of smaller roads up there and some can (and will) get blocked if there is snow further north. However, it is bloody gorgeous up there. Certainly try and travel through the Cairngorms national park.
