...play the "best" bass you can afford, without ignoring a mortgage payment or feeding your family... "Boutique" basses are excellent, but on my budget, I can get a close enough sound out of a "cheap" bass for under $500... often, way less $$... of course, there's always the "pride of ownership" thing...

I try to get the best that I can afford..because I appreciate the difference in quality..longevity..dependability..resale value..i don't have unlimited funding...but when I mount up i want people to notice

I like to have cool instruments that "speak" to me. Some of those are expensive (by my standards anyways) some are not. I don't decide how much I'm into a bass by the price tag. I probably won't ever own a Fodera Monarch, but I've played one and I'd say it was a nicer bass than any Squier I've played or owned. Nothing stopping you from appreciating many different instruments at different price points.

...full disclosure... I play out with an old Yamaha and an Acoustic 360 that I've owned "forever"...I get the sound I want, the band likes it, the audience likes it... don't see much reason to spend many thousands of dollars on the "new girls on the block." YMMV.

...btw, let me recommend to you that you have your amps checked out every year or so for maintenance...

...last time I checked, Piggly Wiggly didn't sell basses or amps... I'm taken seriously no matter how expensive the bass... once they hear me play... kind of a cheap shot, man... if you think a "boutique" bass gives you credibility, you might want to rethink the whole thing...

Something I've learned from being an auto mechanic for the last 36 years is the name on the tool makes little difference. I've seen guys with the most expensive Snap On stuff that couldn't fix a sandwich........ Otoh, I've seen guys with no name tools that could make chicken soup from chicken poop.

Be it a wrench or a Bass, the no name stuff has come leaps and bounds quality wise in the past few decades. I've got a bunch of no name tools in my box and a bunch of SX Basses...... I can get the job done with both.

Don't get me wrong..ive played squire..rouge..univox..equinox...hell I've even had a amp called Motorgator before..it wasn't because I liked them...i was doing what I had to do to get down..which one of us would exchange better for less?..just being real

I'm happy that you're happy. I'm not here to judge. The only reason I've got my american deluxe V is because I got it for a grand under the new price and I decided to give myself an "I just graduated university without accruing any debt" gift and wanted a five-string. Otherwise I'd still be exclusively playing my mexican squier series. TBH though, I really like my american deluxe jazz V as well. I've met a guy who played a Jay Turser P-bass with a beat up old Peavey 115 cab (probably a TKO but honestly I'm not sure) and made it sound DARN good. Gotta love bass, there's room for all of us :)

I'm surprised by how many members are apparently offended by my post and how many rather aggressive posts are in this thread. I did not tell anyone to give up on what they're doing. I did not claim that my opinion is the only valuable opinion. I was not offensive by any means (at least I hope so!). Do your thing. I do mine. It's great if you enjoy your gear. Really! I didn't know that this topic would be so emotional to some that they need to be insulting...?

Agreed. I'm happy with what I have... you're happy with what you have... it's all good.
