I'm now a Sennheiser convert...

... I have a couple of SM58s I've been using for years, but have never been too thrilled about how I sound thru them(vocally)... I just bought a Sennheiser 935 from Sweetwater, and used it on last night's gig - the difference was night and day: my vocals were much clearer and more present in the mix, but without the harsh high end I often get from a 58... I know there are literally thousands of people who sound great thru a 58, but apparantly I'm not one of them - I'm pretty sure this 935 is going to work out great, though...

I've also considered an OM6, and still may get one in the future - we'll see...

Interesting. In my old age I'm starting to come more into my own as a singer and been thinking about replacing the old EV RE10 I've had for years. What made you go for the 935 in particular?

When I went shopping for a mic at GC a year and a half ago I thought I would wind up with the standard SM58, but the guy behind the counter suggested I try out the Sennheiser 835 and A/B it with the Shure first, as they are about the same price. The Sennheiser won easily. Just sounded clearer to me. Same in-store PA system, same settings.

My guitarist has one of each, but he only uses the Sennheiser, too. His Shure is now a backup, and gets used by the drummer on the one song he sings on.

ETA: My mistake, I have the 835...just went and looked at it.

Well, my singer is using a wireless 835, and I sounded better on it than thru my 58 - so I thought I'd go up a notch from that and go to the 935... My voice tends to be a bit trebly thru a 58, so the specs and things I read about the 935 made me think it would help in that regard - and I know from using them in the past that *most* Sennheiser mics sound clearer than *most* Shure mics... I've always done backups and harmonies, but am now branching out into fronting a couple of songs - and that's when my shortcomings thru a 58 became the most obvious... When I fronted thru the 935 last night, it was so much better sounding than my 58 that it was amazing - night and day, actually...

It's actually closer in price to the Beta 58, which I've tried - and know I don't want one of those - they just don't suit my voice all that well... I wouldn't mind owning a Beta 57, though - they're pretty versatile, IME...

Musicians friend has the 935 listed at about a $170.00. Shure SM58s are $99.00.

I like the Senns, but I've converted my band from Sure to Audix recently and been very happy with the result.

Yeah, Audix makes great mics, no doubt - I used to play with a guitarist that used an OM5, and he sang well enough to front alot of bands - he sounded great thru that mic... My current guitarist is using an OM7 that he likes, too - and I consider Audix drum mics to be some of the best out there...

The one thing to consider with those mics is that they have a very shallow field. They are great for a singer that gets right up on the mic, but they drop off dramatically as they start to pull away.

Anyone using the e838? I picked one up off of Craigslist, mint in box for 65 bucks. They are regularly $139 at Musician's Friend, I see they are on sale for $89.99
Hotter and more presence/clarity than a SM58 for sure.
