I'm sick. Fantastic

Well. I'm sitting here getting my car serviced. Most incredibly beautiful sales women walking around. Big gig tonight. Took a vacation day. All happy and psyched. Practiced. Polished. Ready to go. Aaaaand "IT" comes across the Whatsapp. (Rhythm guitarist) "Dudes I'm so sick. Can't breathe. Fever. Blah blah blah" AGAIN :rollno:

Oh well just gotta be busy on my end tonight. Just thought I'd share. Ugg:meh:

Can you do without the guy? Really sad. Unless I'm in hospital or jail, I drag my sorry ass to the gig, and expect others to do likewise.

Sure we "could" do without him. We will tonight but he does a couple of the solos which the lead guy will have to do now. It won't sound nearly as full. Sure gonna keep me on my toes.
Thing is The guys not a prick in any way. Kinda quiet dude.

I think most of us here have played in his condition. I did last year, with a pretty high fever. If he loads up on asprin or Tylenol, he'll be fine - and happy he did the gig. He'll have a war story. I'd suggest having a talk with him. For his sake, not even yours or the rest of the band's.

And if he still decides not to, then you guys can still have lots of fun, AND learn that you can get along just fine. Nobody is going to miss the second guitar except the people on stage and 2 geek musicians that show up at the show. Unless of course he's the only good looking guy in the band :).

it's a bummer to be psyched for a gig and then to get that news. but as they say "the show must go on!" it's possible that while there may be some struggles here and there in your playdown, you could have some very nice moments and surprise yourselves! stay positive, step up...good luck!

i've been lucky all these years: never had to bail on a gig due to illness: i've been sick and/or injured at the gig before, but not enough to stop me from contributing. i've also been too sick at times to even stand up or walk, but those illnesses just didn't threaten a gig. so, some luck there. (fingers crossed)

Agree completely. The singer BL's been jabbin him with the "load up on meds dude come on". Messages.

I went to work sick once. Had to be helped to my desk. Couldn't stand and walk. My boss bounced me and made me go home. Could barely drive. Turns out I had mono. For the next 2 weeks, I was bedridden.

He might actually be seriously sick. But if he's not this sick, he needs to strap on some big boy underpants and do the gig.

I'm gonna be honest here. I think that would be dumb bordering on irresponsible if the surgery was anything more than an epidural.
Trust me, I had a lengthy conversation with my doc beforehand. The only stipulation was that I couldn't "wear" my bass until I had completed a month of PT. I sat while playing. It did no more damage than all of the gigs I had done with blown discs.

My first live gig ever was a 5:00am call for a morning TV show with a band I practiced with once - flu came on hard the night before. Hurt to even move my eyes, especially under the painfully bright studio lights. Looked and felt like complete crap. Did it anyway. Left immediately afterwards and crashed all day. Wasn't going to let these guys down at the last minute. Apparently it went over really well according to people who watched - nothing but compliments. Like others have mentioned - the show must go on and it is part of being a pro musician IMO.

Just want to add that you might want to try using the angle that it will actually be a lot more fun than he thinks. As long as he isn't an idiot about it and doing stupid things. My sick gigs are all quite memorable, and in retrospect, they were kind of fun. I don't drink or get high in any way, and for me, those gigs are the closest I ever get to playing under the influence of mood altering substances :). My experience is also that playing is healing, and doesn't make ya sicker. Although if I were a singer, I'd think differently.

For what it's worth, I've been fighting something off now for a few days - and woke up this morning losing the battle. I'm coughing up green gunk, feel like crap, and just wanna go back to bed. Thankfully I don't have work today. Tomorrow night my Zep tribute has a pretty cool gig, BB Kings. Don't wanna jinx myself, but I'm not worrying about my being there. My only thought while hacking crap up as I was making oatmeal about an hour ago was that yep, tomorrow might wind up being one of those gigs.
