I'm sick. Fantastic

Trust me, I had a lengthy conversation with my doc beforehand. The only stipulation was that I couldn't "wear" my bass until I had completed a month of PT. I sat while playing. It did no more damage than all of the gigs I had done with blown discs.

Yeah man, I had to think you were required to sit. Back surgery is no joke. Once a back is bad it's pretty tough to get right ever again.

I've played with a 103 degree fever a couple of times - adrenaline got me through. That said, I did take a couple months off after back surgery, but as it's church gigs, it wasn't a last minute thing - subs were relatively easy to find. I did practice a lot at home (my lifting limit was 8 pounds, and all my basses are under that), but I didn't go out and play - falling would have been a major issue, and I needed to avoid that.

So, there's sick, and there's SICK. sick you play, SICK you stay home.

I just recently played two gigs within a week of each other while insanely sick. Could barely talk let alone sing backing vocals. I loaded up on Powerade and Dayquil and soldiered on. We played the shows and had a good time doing it.

I've been sick since Monday. Serial symptoms: First the sore throat, then the hacking cough, then the stuffy nose. But I'm cool. Been taking it very easy, because tonight is Friday night and the Show Must Go On. I did tell the BL I would not be jumping off risers tonight. I'm going to stand still and play. Which I should probably do once in a while anyway.

I think I'd usually play a gig unless I'm either puking (nobody wants to see that happen on stage) or deathly ill. Just a cold or common flu? I'll be there! Though I would probably take it easy. IME when I play a gig when I'm sick and go all out, I feel like hell the next day.

Oh, and in that situation, try to stay away from your band mates a bit! No need to get them sick as well.

Well. I'm sitting here getting my car serviced. Most incredibly beautiful sales women walking around. Big gig tonight. Took a vacation day. All happy and psyched. Practiced. Polished. Ready to go. Aaaaand "IT" comes across the Whatsapp. (Rhythm guitarist) "Dudes I'm so sick. Can't breathe. Fever. Blah blah blah" AGAIN :rollno:

Oh well just gotta be busy on my end tonight. Just thought I'd share. Ugg:meh:
Sounds like a great opportunity to unleash your inner Geddy Lee!

I played a gig at the end of last year where our lead guitarist bailed and we couldn't find a last minute sub. I covered a bunch of signature leads on bass, and it was a blast. In fact, some of those leads I kept and are part of the lineup now. The crowd loves it.

I played a gig once right after carpal tunnel surgery on both hands. Stitches still in place over ugly wounds. Also played with the flu many, many times. The key is PERFORMANCE ADRENALINE! You will make it through the gig - your body will surprise you.

I played a gig one week after spinal surgery.

You're my kinda guy, Bodeanly;

I've gigged with a shattered elbow and a severered nerve and tendon in my left index finger - before going to ER! In both cases, I should have sought medical advice. Also gigged with broken ribs - post-ER. Interestingly - and knock on wood - I've never been ill for a gig.
