My Guitarist/Leader bailed when passing a stone......I have passed them in the past, long ago (water is your friend), and I wouldn't be able to play if I was passing one. That is about as painful as a gull stone....and yes, I had those too.

I had a gig back in November and I was not feeling well at all, all day long. Tried to get some kip before the gig, no luck. i was in full blown sweat mode before I even left the house. During set up, drummer asked me if I was ok as I was changing colours before his eyes.
Well, after the first set, I was completely drenched in sweat from head to toe and in all honesty, I felt 100% better! Figured i sweat the nonsense out...

I will be playing sick tomorrow. I came down with a sinus infection yesterday, can't afford to go to the dr. So I will tough it out.
I've played vomiting, with strep throat, and three days after a vasectomy. I passed a kidney stone once, and that would have been the one thing that would keep me from playing.
I was in the Army and in Iraq during the initial push dealing with actual combat 2003/04. They didn't have sick days over there. You just learn to deal with being sick and do your job. I might have not been as lively on stage (especially after the vasectomy) but I did my job.

Apart from that, I remember once, one day before a gig, I died. But then I took some aspirin, lots of water and felt better. Seriously now, the only thing I did, after a nose diafragm surgery, I was practicing for 3 days for a gig, with huge cotton sticks up my nostrils. I was inhaling only through the mouth. But, I've been lucky in my life to have a good constitution (but low charisma and dexterity) and I've been healthy for all of my gigs.
"I'm sick" should have no bearing on 'big gig', unless he's writing from the hospital where he's hooked up to tubes.
Was that all at the same time? 'Cuz if it was, you should get a medal!
I'm pretty sure only Chuck Norris could pull off such a superhuman feat of endurance.

I played an outside gig one fall with a temp in the 101-102 range. I felt like a truck hit me but muscled thru. There are some videos of me playing that gig and It looks like I'm going to take a header any second.
I've played sick quite a few times. The most fun was when I had vertigo. Gotta be near death or highly contagious to bail.

You're correct. I thought about that statement after posting and may have gotten a little overzealous with the importance. It's just a local bar but it's a major local hub for live music that we haven't played at. Good gig. They're all big to me.
For me, its not playing the gig while sick, its schlepping the PA and helping move everyone else's gear to and from is what sucks. Some people dont have to do that of course.
If one of my mates are sick, they better stay home. Dont bring that nastiness around everybody else. Id be pissed if tbey did try to show up.
