The drummer in my band played a gig while a kidney stone was forcing its way through his body, that's way beyond anything i would be capable of. Those things hurt like hell, i've seen grown men cry from kidney stone pain. A flu is nothing in comparison, a bit of medicine will squash the symptoms for a few hours.

wow...I don't think I could do that...I even played two days after breaking the bone in my hand with a cast on... learned to move my fingers real quick...a BC powder anyone? :bassist:

Wow, similar here! I did several gigs just before (one like the week before) back surgery last year, two of them on upright. The amount of meds I was taking at that point, including hydrocodone, still appalls me. Amazed that I was able to function, much less do a gig.

And this is timely: I have a gig tonight, and like OP I'm practiced, polished, and ready to go. Got a text last night from the singer, saying he's sick, including a pic of his face for sympathy. It's a three piece band, and he does primary vocals and harp. He's still gonna do it though, so the gig will still happen, but it won't be our best show.

There have been more than a few times JC pushed through a gig feeling like hammered dog <deleted expletive> only to have the stuff get pushed out during the show. Sometimes it is a sudden sweat and then post-gig one feels almost normal and then the next day you're fine.

never bailed on a gig due to illness, have always played the job no matter what. some of that is just dumb luck. i've been sick enough that there's no way i could have played a gig - no way - but it never was on a gig day/nite/week. pure luck ( or maybe not enough gigs. )

I did this too. Kidney stone is rough. Beyond the pain is the uncontrollable vomitting as it transits the ureter. They gave me strong pain meds and something to control nausea and vomitting. Good thing, too, because it was a really big gig for us, playing in a 800 seat theater. I was thankful we only had to play one 70 minute set.

If you look up the story of when The Beatles played Ed Sullivan show...
George Harrison was very sick with high fever and flu..The Doctor pumped him up with antibiotics and vitamins..just so he can play the show that night...and history was made !!!
I have also played shows when I was sick...the problem is if you have to SING !!! Playing bass is doable, but singing when sick is next to impossible for me when my throat sounds like a frog ..LOL
WHen I am playing with no other rhythm ..ie no keys and or no guitar.. I make sure to bring the old SVT head and play lots of chords on the bass whenever possible... also I start playing runs all over the place in "Double Time"..to fill the space...
