I'm unfortunately convicted to using a "supported" device/OS, with a medical device that needs app interaction to activate its sensors. New sensors were an improvement in every aspect, except the need for app activation.

So I'm on a Pixel 8, factory. The whole "Google don't do evil" or whatever their cheesy slogan was had turned out to be a lie. Apple is perhaps only slightly better in the privacy aspect, but I'm not hopeful.

Yep, you used to be able to quickly browse with 512mb of ram no issues.
You used to use the browser and it gave you results you were looking for instead of whoever paid most for advertising.
You could buy something online without downloading an app first.

My back hurts! get off my lawn!

I'm only in my mid 30's and I'm reminiscing about how good we had it.

I own two very similar older phones.

One is an actual phone which I de-Googled to the best of my ability.

The other one doesn't have a SIM card installed and is used for a variety of apps that are either a must (yes, there is such a thing around here and likely elsewhere soon enough) or convenient and is relegated to wi-fi only. Its camera and storage space are never used.

I'm probably going to revert to an even older phone as my # 1 soon enough, but I'd like to buy a couple of backups first.

I have five different parking apps on my phone because different cities use different apps. Pretty stupid.

Because my last two cars came with no CD or tape player, I had to start using my phone to listen to in the car. I use Spotify, Apple Music and Bandcamp, each for a different reason. For music files that I keep on a hard drive at home, I make Apple Music playlists. For music I bought on Bandcamp, I download those to the phone. Spotify picks up the slack, a lot of it is music I already own on vinyl and CD. Of course none of those apps are as safe to use while driving as a CD or cassette player.

I have Google Home because thatā€™s the only to set up my wi-fi enabled alarm clock :banghead:

Some apps are useful, like the AAA app which Iā€˜ve already used twice when I needed a tow coming home after a gig. The Apple Maps GPS is way better than the old handwritten directions I used to use.

My phone keeps telling me I need to set up my Apple Wallet and Apple Payā€¦no thanks.

I have a flip phone. It makes phone calls. Cost me 6.67 a month. I keep paper maps in the car. The radio in it has a usb port where I put music from my computer in a thumbdrive. My computer lately has annoying popups that block my view asking me if I want to subscribe to annoying popups.
The car is a 1991 Volvo without a tv screen and has real gauges. It is my first fuel injected car. I give you that. Fuel injection does work better.

512mb of ram? More like 640k.
But you need to start a (free) account first.

Some of them are useful, like the one trick apps that I paid for ONCE and use often, such as Metronomics, Amazing Slow Downer, Drum Genius, and iReal Pro. On Mac OS, this would include Logic and Final Cut, which I paid for years ago and just keep using. These apps have no ads, donā€™t appear to be trying to sell you something, and are pretty trouble and drama free. Then there are free apps like Libby that serves as a library interface, which are also useful.

Many if not most other apps get annoying because they seem to have ulterior motives and are always popping up ads are trying to get you to ā€œupgradeā€. Ugh.
