I'm tired of searching...

I had Nino build a bass for me back when he was using Warmoth parts and the neck was too chunky. I'm sure these current basses would be much different.
That was a typical complaint on his first 20 or so basses. I have a ~newer one and the neck would be much more to your liking. But, I don't think a Valenti would do anything for you that a Sadowsky didn't.

Gonna sound old school ...but it's hard to beat a P Bass......I recently landed a Hot Rod P.A 2000 model I love it.Have had several in years past ...standard ...not Hot Rod.And regretably traded or sold them in a similar quest as you ...and at the end have come to it and a GK rig.....and am happy w/ my tone. The bass is light enough....I am 51 and coming to grips w/ limitations...good luck on your search ...all the best. Tommy

Well, of course it is. Tone is subjective, feel is subjective - these are all in the head and translated to the ears, hands, fingers...it all starts in our heads. This is not news.

And I'll type it once more with feeling - YES, if I had some of the basses back now that I have sold or traded away I would not be dealing with this issue.

Um, can you buy one of those basses back?

I have come to be happy w/ a Hot Rod P bass...light enough American quallity etc. etc. I also have been 'round the block in quest of the bass and the tone....it's all relative and for me here I am back at the P Bass .....All the best on your search you will get a lot of input on this one .
But w/ mine I get the fat Motown bottom...and can dial in the funk...easily w/ the three knob configuration. works for me, simplicity is key to a comfortable instrument. All the best..Tommy

I would say go back through the list of names and tell every builder what you want to hear in the bass and let the Builder build the instrument they feel will fit that verse ordering a bass and telling them what woods You want used.

With different manufactures and their own electronics and pickups, each responds differently. an Ash body with maple neck and Maple board in an MTD sounds nothing like a Sadowsky no matter if its a JJ or modern sadowsky. Same goes for even comparing a Nordy to a sadowsky, AC, etc.

Choosing your own woods can sometime be a double edge sword.

Its not really far to say you have tried all these basses and none of them have worked for you when some where custom order to your specs and some where just purchased new or used. A "BrandX" with a maple board and ash body and dual coils might not have been your thing, but an alder body and maple board with J style pickups might have been the exact desire

So the best bet would be to order one Bass from Every builder on the market and tell them tonally what you want.......... Then compare them all at once .... :hiding:

Hey Andy, nice to hear from you. I did try one of the new VF5's at the Bass Exchange - they are pretty sweet indeed but they have a hefty price tag for a bass without exotic looks. I'm not saying I need the exotic look, but these bad boys are priced in the Sadowsky range with all the bells and whistles.

Hey Mark.

I hear you on the VF5. It seems expensive, but I can see why it's priced that way. For those who really want the F Bass preamp and playability but with a more traditional J bass tone, you really can't get that with anything else. I'm sure it's a killer of a bass.

I don't think there is such thing as "the bass" for me at least , sometimes I love my Jazz and sometimes I love my modern, sometomes my P bass, depending on the day, the moon, the mood, the music , the sun, the weather and so on. I was always chasing the dragon until I reallze it didn't exist.
Now I am much more happier and I am lucky to own "the basses" Do I need them all? NO, but it works for me :)

Good luck on the chase. :bassist:

My guess is you'll never be happy. There will be multiple basses you try that will get you 95% of they way there but never 100%. I get basses that are very close to the sound in my head but feel right also. How a bass feels is the most improtant thing, follwed by its sound. Remember, the crowd won't notice subtle sound differences and the sooundman has ultimate control over your sound.

Yeah B...that's what I'll do...order one of each!!!

Or maybe just one from you.

That's kind of the idea here - I had a lot of great stuff when I was in "discovery" mode. Now that I am in "keep" mode, I can weed out what I didn't like and focus on what I want.

Look, they are killer basses for sure and a good option. I'll revisit one soon.

it sounds to me that you need this

if you never had one before, of course, the L-2500

it's passive, it's active, it's parallel, it's serial, it's jazz, it's stingray, it's anything you want it to be xD

I am not a G&L guy, I have never liked the necks...but thanks for your suggestion. I appreciate it!

I am SO not worried about how the crowd reacts to my bass tone in a band situation. I have stated it before in this thread that this is NOT a live sound issue at all. This is about chasing less and pinpointing MY taste, feel and tone. I have fooled around with selling and trading for a long time. Now it's time to become one with a main bass - that's all.

And yes, I will be happy. There is not a doubt in my mind that I can have one bass that will speak to me tonally, physically and aesthetically.

Why not make a complete list of the features you need, those you like and those that are deal breakers. Sounds to me as though you've tried many of the modern jazz iterations-what was it about, say, the Elrick NJS (one of my faves) that missed?

i'd say get a "real" p-bass, but that doesn't fit your description. p's speak to me, sounds like maybe not to you. on the other hand most of what you named is fairly anti-p so if you haven't tried one maybe you should.

you realize i'm sure that your question is a lot like "i can't find the woman/man of my dreams...", and we're all like "try angelina/brad" when it's way more complicated and much simpler than that. there's no right or wrong answer, including continueing to sleep around with every bass in sight...

The P-Bass is great but in all of the years I have been playing there has never been a P-Bass that covers all styles...I have owned more than a few.

And a bass is NOTHING like a woman...I have a great woman and she is everything I want and need. Nice try with that anaology though, but it's a huge miss.
