I'm Too Old to....

Who cares! I suppose it depends on whom you pushed first.
The cork that sealed the bottle of whatever the rest of us are drinking to celebrate.
I'm to old to carry anything but Markbass cabs, to old for anything other than a short scale (Ric just collects dust now), and to old to play out more than once a month...
I am also too old to read 6 pages of posts. I might die before I get to the end. But I am also too old to:
Lug really heavy gear to get that extra 2% of perfect tone. Not worth it. Nobody cares.
Deal with band drama or band mates with a ton of baggage.
Deal with big egos. We play in a mid-market cover band. If you were that good, you wouldn't be here.
But I'm not to old to rock n roll, rip it up on a Saturday night, entertain the crowd, dance with girls on the dance floor while playing, and just generally have fun.

I'm NOT too old to have fun playing. I AM too old to put up with people who spoil the fun of playing. I'll (usually) be tactful the first time, but if I think you need me to be more direct, I can do that.
I'm too old to beg (market heavily), or kiss butt, to get a gig.

I'm not too old to have fun - and playing with a great group of people making seriously creative music - is about as much as I get with my clothes on. Class D and neo magnets are my friend. The deal is, nobody knows how much time is left. Arthritis? Stroke? A jealous husband? There will be a day when I have to hang it up. Day's not here yet. Rock on.

I am THANKFUL that I am NOT too old to:
- play and enjoy gigs at any time of the day or night
- wear a bass for 2 hours at a time
- still appreciate and find new music that I like in the underground scene (rock is NOT dead like I thought it would be in my teens...it is still in the basements, dive bars, music halls and practice rooms of the world
- drive any distance to play/practice/gig
- get into the pit every once in a while (as long as it is circular with no Ninja/jock/thug crap)
- learn new music on my bass
- learn old music on my bass
- carry my gear around...though my amp rig/case is a 2 person job no matter what
- still hate mainstream pop crap...
- wear my Docs; Chuck taylors; metal/hardcore/punk shirts;denim jacket with Iron Maiden backpatch;bomber jacket....
I am also glad that I AM old enough to understand old school values and respect for the scene/music and musicians, as well as having the wisdom that age brings to temper and understand the spontaneity that youth brings. I feel like I live in the best of both worlds....

I'm only 33, but I'm definitely too old to play in college/hipster bars. I have friends who are my age that are trying to fit into that hipster mold, and they just look ridiculous. One of them is a Dad. You can't be somebody's Dad and be a hipster at the same time. Bullocks!

In all seriousness, I know MANY hipsters/punx/metalheads...whatever, who are WAAAAYYYY better parents than their "conservative/Joe 9-5" counterparts. In fact, most of the polo/dress shirt, yoga pants/jogging coat wearing, BMW/Odyssey/SUV driving types I know are rat bastards as far as parenting goes. Just sayin'
I have a big problem remembering all the licks unless it's something pretty simple. I was trying to learn Purple Haze on guitar & I thought I was going to lose my mind trying to remember just the intro.
Funny you say that, I was just talking about this the other day. When I was in my teens/20s, I would learn a song and remember it forever. I still remember most of the songs I used to know from that time. But now I'm in my 30s, and if I spend an hour learning a song, I'll seriously forget it the next day. If I tried to learn the guitar part for Stairway to Heaven now, for example, I'd need the tabs in front of me everytime. But since I learned how to play it when I was a teenager, I remember every note and nuance.
