Improving technique suggestions

Hello all, I'm a student who is in a band with some buddies. I guess we sort of have an indie alt rock sound. Recently two of them decided to quit the band, leaving us as a three piece. We still sound good, just a little bare. What I was wondering is if any of you have any suggestions on how to up my bassing game if you know what I mean. I'm wanting to be really present in the sound of our band and really hit those bass rifs that stand out in the song and make you notice. Sort of how Flea plays in the Peppers. Any suggestions on styles, techniques, instructional DVDs, or anything that could get me there would be much appreciated! Thanks

Yes...but, you already suggested it. Learn RHCP songs that you like--by ear, and really try to get them note for note. Don't cheat and use TAB either, just get as close as you can.

Everything that I learn by ear that way somehow comes out in my playing in one way or another. It gets ingrained in a usable way.

What oldcatfish said is in my opinion the best way to go. When you really sit down to take a song apart and understand how the bass works its way through it, you're bound to walk away with some of those pieces still sticking to you - and they'll show when you play your own stuff afterwards.
