I can think of two pieces of advice that really benefitted me a great deal.

1. Play with people better than you.

2. Turn the amp up and play lighter.

all good stuff --- i can relate to (and remember) hearing most of these gems when i started playing bass. (or before that when i played sax for so many years.) all of it helped me! and FWIW, i've passed on to others the same advice when appropriate (whether they played bass or not!).
