"In" Basses Vs. "Out" basses

Thats a great list Dr. P

The only thing that really jumps out at me as being out of place is the lakland skyline. It belongs in "IN" (IMO). I know there are plenty of folks with DJ's on there gas list, not to mention 55-02's.

I also think that post 1990 MIa at least deserves an "in between". There has been plenty of bad blood over MIA fender's, but there's still a heap of TB'ers that live & die by their late model fenders.

yep...i think the newest Jazz bass Deluxes are greats instruments,they can beat any bass in the $2,000 at any moment,see the magazines and concerts and you can see Fender,5 Fenders for each one other brand,niceeee :bassist:

Well, just becuase an instrument is good doesn't necessarily make it an "in" bass. That's the whole point of this thread, I want to see what's good but not "in". Fender's aren't a fad type of bass. You don't see a thread everytime someone buys a new fender, like you do with the "in" basses. That's why I put it in the "in between" bracket.

i understand your point of view but the whole thread is based in opinions,not facts,but in this days Fenders still the most selling basses and democracy is mayority,Fenders remain leader and most imitate because they are too good,nothing imitate bad basses,you try to imitate the better ones. :D

I'm going to guess that Keith Roscoe's basses will grow in popularity. But I don't know if Roscoe's will ever be as popular as Sadowsky or Lakland. I don't see Lakland dropping off, the Skyline Series has made the Lakland sound a lot more affordable. I've priced the Sadowsky Metro series and they're a bit pricey IMHO. :hiding:

For that kind of cash I'd rather buy a used Roscoe, Modulus, or spend a bit extra on a used MTD.

I have some nice Fender P's and J's in my arsenal so I personally don't have a great desire to buy a Sadowsky or a Lull, but I've long admired Lakland basses. I will own one someday.

When I play my MIA Jazz Deluxe FMT at gigs, I certainly don't feel embarrased, especially when strangers come up and say how beautiful it is. It's in, don't worry.

What's up for the future? I'll bet Nino's greatest days are ahead of him. He's been putting out some mighty fine looking instruments, and they are already catching on here. I hope you have a business plan, Nino, because your rep is going to grow, and you're going to need some space, equipment, and employees. I just hope you and Roger don't end up like Boyd Coddington and Chip Foose.

i'm going by what i see people playing in the nyc area, which is where i stomp ground. I'd say the "in" basses are...

Fender Geddy Lee Jazz's
Newer gibby T-birds.
Older Jazz basses.
ibanez soundgears

The inbetween are...

Rickenbacker's
Musicmans

The "out" basses are...

Schecter
Warwick
Spector
Bc Rich
The list is alot longer and im not willing to keep listing.

The thing that is most surprising is that bolt-on neck basses seem to be the "in" thing these days. When I was a kid, buying a neck through bass was just a dream and it seemed that that was what made a high end bass high end. I can definitely see another Leo Fender design derivitive being the next big thing. Didn't I read that Sadowsky is going to be offereing MM pickups on their basses?

It is kinda funny though. If you read other TB threads on what the best fretless basses are, you will read about Zons, Pedullas and F Basses. Pedullas are still praised as being one of the best fretless basses available, but in this thread they are "out".

Thats a good point about the bolt on's. It does seem that a vast majority of the "in" basses are bolt on's right now.

The pedulla thing is another case of good does not equal "in". It can also be traced to the fact that fretless basses make up a very small part of the market.

and again the price play a huge factor,bolts on,s are less expensive basses and for this reason you see more people saying they are in,because they can purchase this type of instruments......all is based in points of views and opinions...the vast mayority of us are medium class work guys,we can,t buying a $2,000 or more bass.we have to pay house,car,we have childrens we have tons of bills,and again a nice Fender or Music Man save your live...oh well :hyper:

In: Fender Geddy Lee! The Fender American Deluxe is quite popular lately. Sadowskys are still huge in their market, and Ricks and Musicmans are quite present. Laklands are building a name for themselves. SX still rule in the lower end market, although they aren't as mentioned as they were 6 months ago (the megathread is a perfect example).

Out: Ibanez and Warwick, as mentioned, haven't been so popular lately.
