So I bought this thru the classifieds here. $300 shipped great deal and TB'er. I read the previous thread when my seller bought it. He did a ton of work on this and did it right. Everything was sanded down and 3 coats of mini wax applied. I did change out the pick up for a Fender US pick up and upgraded the pots and wiring. So I have vol and tone with third knob a dummy knob. I did a quick neck adjustment and with the TI flats that came on it. This bass just barks and growls. Weight is around 8.5 lbs and with a 3 inch wide strap it balances nicely. I had been drooling over one for years and wasn't concerned that it had been refinished with all the hardware being original even the Grover tuners. It is quickly becoming my fav bass to play.

Very nice! Those old SD Curlee's are great basses and rather forward thinking with their 'extended into the body' necks. Medium scale too if I'm not mistaken. Scott Beckwith of Birdsong now holds the rights to the name and is still making them. Last time I checked he even had some NOS bodies and necks.

Yea the neck has some nice flame and notes just snap right off. Love maple necks!

I checked Birdsong out and even looked at having one built. I kept looking and this came up.

SD Curlee never really got the popularity they deserved. They were really nice instruments. Nicely made and simple enough that there just wasn't anything to go wrong.

Is yours one of the earlier, US-made ones or the later Korean ones? (Not that it makes much difference; The Korean ones were well-made also).

It's a US. Seller said early 80's. My research with that bridge 76-78. No way to track serial number.

It feels a lot like a Gibson neck. You are correct there is no taper. It's weird after you play it a bit it actually feels comfy. Does take a little getting use to.
