His main technique is (sometimes) grain enhancement, clear seal and then he mixes a translucent color coat. That way he's not locked into a color until he's happy with it vs. a dye. He does dye occassionally but most of his more striking finishes are done this way. I'll see if I can get him to check in and correct anything I got wrong.

He did this on the first bass he built for me, a Spalted Maple Xtreme five. After the bass coat he went into the booth and shot different finish coats so we could see what they'd look like. Photoshop has nothing on seeing that done in real time, in real life.

The only ones I know of were from the season opener on Bobby Jones' Gospel on BET. I've been trying to get a recording of that... I was there and even I couldn't believe what that bass sounded like. Massive. It belongs to an audio engineer/bassist friend of mine here in Maryland. I'll check with him and see if he's recorded it.

Thanks Brad, that would be awesome! If it sounds anything like it looks, then I imagine the sound would be massive. Brubakers definitely got some cool stuff going on.

I like it -- with two caveats: I *really* think it calls for cloverleaf tuners, and The wood control plate's a bit too much. I think a metal control plate would be an improvement.

I'd like to hear clips. Any plans to get a few up?

EDIT: I'm a dolt: when I posted, I didn't realise there were two more pages to this thread. I see now that the other Jazz-style axes have the cloverleafs. Very nice. The sculpting on the headstock looks more extreme in black, eh?

Been a while, thought I'd throw this out there. Vic Douglas' new Brubaker bass is almost complete and it's pretty interesting. I played it today. Bartolini humbucker plus two 59J's... and it works:D. The versatility is pretty ridiculous and very easy to use.
