Them's some beautiful basses.
Hanging out around here sometimes gives me massive GAS.
If I lived a different life I could see sampling a bunch of basses from some of the fine luthiers we see here - Kevin would be one of them.

That's an interesting system for the neck on the 4 string. Is the neck bolted above or behind the pickup and is the pickup routed through the tenon? Looking at the picturs of the bass before finishing it looks like the tenon is laid out past the pickguard, is that the reason for the burst around the guard? I love Kevins paint work around the Spalts, beautiful, works of art!

I think the neck tab does extend past the pickguard on the 4, which was the initial prototype for the JXB basses. I believe that either the pickguard will extend a little farther towards the bridge on the final pickguard equipped basses or he'll just build the top farther up to cover the end, either will address that issue in th future. Probably not as far as the guards on the Brutes but that's the basic idea. This is Kevin's take on a 70's style J with his neck joint. AFAIK he had decided on the burst finish prior to starting the bass.

The neck bolts on above the neck pickup and well below it. Because of the screw spacing on the J type pickups, the neck pickup screws directly into the neck tab. I don't think he had to route the tab but I could be wrong. It's fairly thick so there would be plenty of wood left if it did have to be routed.



On the burl topped JXB five it's obviously not an issue with a full top.

Brad, the 10 looks amazing, i'd never seen the xtreme that the brute were bases off before either, looks incredible.

Actually I think the Brutes really go back to the countertop bass. I think a few people saw it posted on TB. Two halves of laminated pressed wood were used for the body and it incorporated his neck joint. The sound and playability had a bunch of people asking him to build them. Plus they actually didn't look bad.

The pickguard basses have a modified bolt-thru housing which makes them a bit easier to build. The pickguard assembly holds the electronics which negates the large rear route.

The countertop bass is still holding up great and I think Kevin occassionally gigs with it.

He has that seam hidden very well on the finished product.
I'm not worthy to clean his paint guns.

This actually went pretty quick from idea to execution.

The new Brute line is based on the NBP or pickguard model basses. Looking for feedback on this bridge, Kevin did the same with the knobs on my fretless six:

The finish, colour sceme, and execution on that 10 string is just nuts. As is the black jazz bass with the outrageous pickguards.

Beautiful and totally unique stuff - nice!
