Inappropriate first dance wedding songs

There are plenty of songs that fit the mood of a multi-generational love-celebration where the lyrics miss the mark. I though that was maybe the "oops" situations the thread might be about was over-thinking this.

A good choice to be sure, can be an easy oops due to style - but people who pick songs for wedding dances, often the bride or groom, don't always think so much about lyrics, as much as they do about dancing to the slow groove or up tempo. - But you make a good point regarding what some think of as stereo-typical wedding music. - I quit doing weddings years ago due to initially having the personal philosophy that it was a sacred, love celebration event, but finding that the majority of people weren't always taking it a seriously as I was as a musician - both at the altar and the reception.

Families often told me that the bride, while planning, was suffering from temporary insanity. I heard that more than once.

I used to play in a band that did plenty of weddings. For a decade, about 1999 to 2009.

Guitar, Keys, Drums, Trumpet, Sax, Trombone, and me on Double bass, all in Tuxedos, and one tall and willowy Platinum Blonde chirp that looked great in an evening gown, and sang pretty darn good too... kinda bitchy sometimes, but she held up her end of the deal pretty well. The good news is we usually got paid somewhere between $3-4k per gig. We took it pretty serious, in a fun kind of way, and the people that hired us usually did too... I have no regrets for that. That band was a hoot.

Are you on the look out for your first dance song? You might want to avoid all these tunes which perhaps don’t send quite the right message for married life.

We actually heard this being discussed by a bride and groom. Apparently the groom wanted something upbeat to dance to. True, it does have a pretty funky beat, but the questionable lyrics and not to mention that video make this a complete no-no.

Even if you put this on in a funny-aren’t-we-ironic way, this song is hard to dance to.

3. Gold digger – Kanye West ft. Jamie Foxx
A you a money-grabbing woman who’s only marrying your husband for dollar? No? Then this is not the first dance song for you!

We’ve heard this played at weddings quite a few times because it’s so pretty. However, the lyrics are actually all about a man who’s only being nice to get some lovin’. Nice.

5. Heaven knows I’m miserable now – The Smiths
The title alone should be enough to put you off.

6. It’s the end of the world as we know it – REM
Not even a little bit funny and guaranteed to create a flat, miserable mood for the rest of the evening.

The title for this song is better, but the song is about leaving someone. Plus what on earth do you do when that big long note is playing?

A beautiful song about loneliness and a one-night stand. Not really what you want for the happiest day of your life.

Made legendary by the film The Wedding Singer, this film is the ultimate anti-love anthem.
