Have you considered a Ritter Royal?

They are dirt cheap right now, and the quality is decent.
Makes a good beater bass, you don't have to worry too much if it gets thrown around.

Bob, I'll chime in on the SX. I bought an SX SJB62 Jazz four stringer this summer . . .

Isn't that a "short scale" bass ? My present bass is a Fender Jazz bass (made in Mexico, 2007, I think). Would switching off to a short scale bass pose any problems ?

It's actually highly likely the Squier will need a set up as well.
...learn how to do your own set ups. They are not that hard to do...
