"Ink Fingers"

So Lately I have been practicing my bass, and I notice that my fingers are getting almost tinted a black color, similar to when ink from a newspaper or magazine rubs off on your hands. Maybe I need to change my strings more often, but I feel like that isn't the case, and these strings certainly aren't grimey. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!!

Do you work with chemicals at all?

Chlorine and certain other acids will combine with the strings and start to corrode them. However, I can't imagine that you would have enough on your fingers to turn black and not notice that it was on there.
