Installing guitar stands into cabinet sides?

I usually lean my basses against the side of my cab. I know its not the best thing to do, but its the most convenient most of the time. I figure I can make this a little bit better for my basses and build a foldable or removable stand on the sides. Has anyone done this before? Or would it impact the cab's construction/sound?

I figure I could install the 2 basic parts of the stand, a bottom rest and a neck rest. Basically I could just screw in a collapsible neck rest near the top that folds down. I could also put a small hole in the cab that the bottom rest would lock into.

Sorry if I'm not making sense. I've had a few glasses of eggnog with the family already.

Ideas?

..............................I fail to see the advantages of this over a normal guitar stand! It sound like it would be a horrible nuisance when, you know, carrying the thing Something that IS pretty cool is the kind that attaches to the top of your stack and hangs the bass from the headstock, but folds down so your cab is still rectangular

a hercules style clip could be mounted on a piece of ply between the head/cab to hang a bass on the side....even notching out the ply in the shape of a hanger or (2)one on each end would work .....give ya an excuse to have a big ol' tube head to hold it in place

I have a really old tripod stand that'll hold 3 instruments. It took up too much room that way (less when using it for only two). So I took one holder arm off it by grinding the rivet out, and stuck the arm through the grill of one of my cabs. Even that way it would hold my Six string.

But just to make sure it was really stable I cut a groove in a chunk of plywood, ran a sharpie over it to get some black, and then screwed it to the grill behind the grill using a couple of small rubber feet as washers. I can move it around if I want the placement further in one direction or another. Works great. Someone would have to knock my cab over to cause a real problem. The arm is around 6" long and stores easily for schleppage.

Already been done... kinda...

And it really works great ... been using it for about a year now,
ever since the drunken sub drummer knocked over my bass on a "regular stand!"

when i saw wolfmother, their bassist had a stand hanging between the head and his 8x10. not sure how, as i was really far away, but it held his spare bass no problem.

maybe he cut up a stand or a wall hanger and mounted it to the cab?

he certainly changed instruments much less often than andrew stockdale.. new guitar for every song. ridiculous.

i dunno if you already have a stand or plan on buying one, but why go through all the trouble just to hang it on your cabinet?

What trouble? My build took all of 15 minutes, using a part that I paid practically nothing for.

stands don't cost much, just put it on the floor and leave your cabinet alone.

When an emcee at a benefit raffle gig tripped on my supposedly out-of-the-way stand and dumped it and my bass on the stage and gouged the bass, I decided I wanted more security than any of the store-bought commercial solutions I'd owned had to offer. It's also proven more convenient for me.

Thanks for the tip though ; }

Does anybody do the old school style where, you actually hang the bass by its strap over the cab/stack ? Straplocks are a must for this to work, but I used to do this when I had my old Kustom 215/200 head rig. It was a perfect fit to just have the rig " wear " the bass. Don't know if this would be practical with today's gear though.
