Instrument cable as speaker cable

OK, here's the deal...

Speaker cable is designed to handle higher current than an instrument cable. Current is defined as the number of electrons passing a certain point in a certain time. Speaker signals are high enough that the inherent radio and other stray electrical noises they might pick up are buried under the signal you want. Therefore they don't need sheilding. But instrument level signals are very low level and so RF and other interference can easily be as loud as the signal. So, instrument cables are shielded. Plus, instrumetn level signals are very very low current so they're smaller wires.

Now, if you use an instrument cable to drive a speaker load, you're trying to cram more current down wires that aren't physically big enough to carry the electrons. So, what do those electrons do? They run into friction, where the energy changes from your audio signal into heat. That has two bad effects. First, less of the signal your amp is putting out gets to the speaker (that means you ain't as loud as you could be), AND, the heat builds up in the cable.

What does heat do? Well, it can start to melt the insulation in the cable. That could cause the two conductors to short against each other. What happens then? Depends on how well made your amp is how lucky you might be. A dead short on a speaker output can be catastrophic- melt the output transformer of a tube amp or fry the output transistors on a solid-state amp. But it's got other more devious ways to mess you up.

The strain of the heat can accelrate the terminal life of the components.

So, don't do it. It's silly and pointless. Cables just ain't that expensive.

If you've been doing it for a while, your amps ultimate life may be shortened, but it's probably not something that's cost effective to repair. That's because it doesn't really make sense to just replace the output tranny or power transistors just because you've abused it. As long as it sound right and works right now, and you quit using guitar cables, then you're OK at least for a while.

In the case of the guitarist using on to connect his guitar amp to the speaker cab, that extra loading might be causing the amp to distort differently than it will with a proper speaker cable. But that sound he likes is likely to go away in a puff of smoke, followed shortly after by the sound of an amp tech saying "That'll be more money than you can think of".

Another danger in using an instrument cable as a speaker cable is that the much higher capacitance of the instrument cable presents a very high capacitive load to the amp - possibly much greater than it was designed to be able to safely handle. This high capacitive load could make the power amp section become unstable and go into a horrible electronic oscillation, sometimes at more power than the amp can safely put out. Additionally, I would not want to take the chance that this oscillation might also interfere with the amp's protection circuitry.:rollno:

Fortunately I used the wrong set up at low volumes- 10 watts- I remember the 2 times I played live during that period- with 150 watts- I borrowed a speaker cable.
Different situation???
Morover the instrument cables I used are on good condition. I wish I don´t shortened the period of life of my amp

If your amp sounds OK you dodged the bullet.

Like what was mentioned the instrument cable is not meant to carry high power at low Resistance. It is made to carry low voltage at high impedance.

They are two different things. What happens is the cable will melt at an inappropriate time and then short possibly hurting your amp. If it was still making noise you never got to the shorting point. It might have melted some though.

You're probably OK at this point.

The cable did not melt....I use it at low volumes
 
Your amp is fine. You did no damage. Do not again use an instrument cable as a speaker cable.

If you do, a contingent of Talk Bass members will come down to Buenos Aries, find you and hit you alongside the head with a wet kipper!

I believe I am a bit paranoid....
Now I remember only one time when a friend was playing there was a noise and like an explosion, the amp turned off....perhaps it was for using the instrument cable...It wasn important for me at that moment, was lucky.....
Now i am using speaker cable from head to cab and instrument cable from the amp to the compressor. The rig is sounding better than before.
Perhaps the explosion made a damage, I am analising to carry the amp to a sound technician....
 
Kind of a thread jack but maybe the OP could use the info too. can you use heavy duty extension cords(the big orange ones for outdoor use) for wire in a speaker cable. I mean, can you just put 1/4" jacks on each end and it would be safe? my guitarist is thinking of doing this since he has a couple extras laying around and we would rather not spend the money if we don't have to.

why carve up a ten dollar extension to save four dollars worth of speaker wire

The answer is yes. Just make sure that whichever colored connector(s) go to the tip of one plug also go to the tip of the other plug to retain correct phasing. Also, rather than waste the third inner wire (if there is one), connect it as well - either to the tip of both plugs or to the sleeve of both plugs. This will increase the effective gauge of the cable by 50%.

But never use these to make instrument cables - they're not shielded and instrument cables must be.
 
So what about the other way around? My guitarist once forgot his instrumentcable and used the instrumentcable of the unused second guitar amplifier in our rehearsalspace. Though this isn't likely to happen ever again (or I will beat him severely), just for interest's sake, what would happen if you used a speaker cable between your amp and your bass (or in this case guitar)? I guess nothing? Will the bigger gauge or thicker insulation destroy your tone of what?
