Introduction to Beer

Yikes. Hopefully the increased popularity of Belgian beers in other countries doesn't turn them into lesser beers to increase production and other marketing crap to increase quantity over quality.

I was talking to a guy the other day and his wife is in Marketing, and I THINK it was Stella Artois he was talking about -- he said that it was just a little mediocre brew that a conglomerate bought and sank a fortune into marketing to create this boutique brand aura around what is really not a very good beer.

I drink it occasionally....it's not absolutely horrible, but I think I decided I'd just as soon drink PBR...

I'm going to show my cards here and say I like Budweiser - the US stuff. I mean, obviously I like the Czech brew - but the US version seems to have a bad rep. It's pretty good, for a rice beer; strong, refreshing, not an overpowering taste. A long-neck Bud is a guilty pleasure.

It is massively overpriced in the UK, though - in fact the Czech Bud is often cheaper.

I can't comment on quality of it long ago since I can't recall it being available outside of very large cities about 6 years ago, but it tastes the same to me years later.

Probably not. Inbev is just one of a lot breweries in Belgium (albeit the largest), and the important Belgian beers, like the trappists, are brewed in independent entities who won't trade quality for sales!

I'll sleep a little better at night knowing that.

I will be be trying this in the near future. I just have to find it!

I just checked my fridge - the "tastes like bacon" one is their Urbock, not the Marzen shown in the photo. Apart from that the bottle + label is exactly the same.

Not a beer you're going to want to drink all night, but certainly an interesting change.

I've always thought it was more like beef jerkey than bacon, but I love the Urbock! Their other varieties are a little more subtle, but a great beer with grilled/smoked foods.

Rogue makes the smokehouse ale, which is also very nice and there are several companies that make a smoked porter. Smoked porters are about my favorite beer during winter months that I might brew a batch as soon as the weather cools down.

My advice really is not to try anything too expensive yet and definitely don't buy anything too cheap, just go out and try and few bottles from different breweries (often you find you like a lot of beers from one brewery and hate a lot of beers from another) and try them all and see what you like. We can all tell you our favourite beers, mine being Innis & Gunn oak aged beer -seriously guys, you have to try this one-, Leffe, Pelforth Brune, Wernesgruner and all of the Wychwood brews, but you will be completely different and have different tastes so just try a little of everything and then you can decide whether you even like beer or not!

Experimentation is key!
