IP112 will it do old school sound?

My question is will the ip112 do old school sound besides the hifi/flat thing.
I understand it also depends what kind of preamp you're using.
Unfortunately the only european distributor lives at the other side of the nordsea so I'm trying to figure out if a trip to London is worth the effort.
I'm looking for a setup that will do old school/upright and more modern stuff as well.:help:

The IP's will pretty much put back out what you put into them. However, if you are looking for Ampeg 8X10 with no tweeter tone then NO it most certainly will not. Caveat aside, it is a versatile little cab that will thud convincingly enough when you run a passive P with flats through it.

I wasn't thinking of an ampeg fridge( wouldnot want to carry that around). I was wondering if the berg wasn't too hifi and also capable of a more round and mellow sound.But you answerd my question, thanks.:)

Given how expensive they are, I'd highly recommend trying before buying.

That being said, I tried one when I was looking at my IP310, and thought it sounded more "warm, full, and old school" than the IP310. Personally, I wanted a more hi-fi tone, so I went with the IP310.

I will admit to standing there like a hick with my mouth hanging open when I heard how much sound was coming out of that tiny little box. Add in the EX112, and you have a nice modular rig with a nice warm fat tone, and it will get quite loud if you want.

I remember thinking that if I played in a R&B or other old-school type group that I would have chosen the IP112 in a heartbeat. Portability is a real nice bonus.

P.S. I'd pair it with a tube preamp for maximum old school sound.

I own and IP mini stack and it will put out whatever you put into it... it CAN really do anything. Right now, I play mostly reggae and Rocco Prestia type funk. I also play in a cover band playing all styles of music. The rig backs me up effortlessly every time. It pulls of the old school thing very well, without being muddy, and can really cut through the mix.

It really does depend on your intrument and pre, but I find the cabs are inherently warm and silky sounding rather that hi-fi... like a studio monitor. Any "fenderesque" bass matched with a warm sounding pre should sound great!

What kind of bass will you be playing? And any ideas for a preamp?

A GREAT compromise would be a HT112 with a Markbass LMII. Signifigantly less $$$ if cost is an issue.

I have two jazz basses a 68 and a 06 masterbuilt Kendrick the latter gets the most playing time, and for 5string I use a celinder update(great but heavy).For acoustic gigs a turner renaissance or a very old upright.
I already have demeter pre(the one with the parametric eq) hope that it will work nicely with the ip112.

A GREAT compromise would be a HT112 with a Markbass LMII. Signifigantly less $$$ if cost is an issue.

Untill now I only heard the LMii with mb cabs, it's a great value but a ht/ex stack plus LMII is about the same price as an IP112.I hope this will be the last time I buy new gear:D so I'm willing to pay the extra cash:smug:

If you are a J bass fan, I have heard nothing that sounds better than the LMII, and it sounds great with the Berg stack. Much more growl and punch than the Demeter pre IMO. It won't do quite the volume of the IP with the EX extension (per a review a while back), but it just sounds amazing with a modern J Bass. Probably the best Celinder head I've run across!

Edit: TBer Xgabriele went through a few iterations of the IP, HT, LMII thing, so you might want to PM him if he doesn't show up here.

Sounds like a great set up. The Demeter sounds GREAT with the IP cabs. I would like to pick one up at some point as well. I think you will get what you are looking for with this cab. I reiterate however that it is best to taste before you buy...

I have played the LMII a couple of times but only with mb cabs(no bergs) and also the r500 it struck me as a great bargain but in absolute terms a bit lean and 2-d.But perhaps with the berg's?
I'm looking for the right balance between the fundamental and it's harmonics, I mean in the tone itself(I've been brought up as a classical db player and you're always trying to find"your" tone)
Glockenklang has it, Merlin(alas no longer made) has it with more strength and maybe the new blackcat by Tecamp that I heard quickly.
But those are heavier and more pricy than the IP112 so I hope the Berg will do.
Soon I'll get the IP/EX on approval, will let you know if it's the end of my search:hyper:

Cool. I'm sure it will sound great. I wish you could hear the LMII through either the Berg's or Epi cabs... really amazing. Warm and punchy, but also that little bit of top end sizzle that really makes a J come alive.

I actually replaced my Glock HR with the MB SD800.. that head is really something... but super clean versus the slightly vintage-type warmth of the LMII.

Anyway, let us know what you think!

Ain't that the truth? I run the EX/HX 112 mini stack with my TFunk, and EVERYTIME I do a sit in gig, the same thing happens:

Guitar Player: THAT'S your rig?
Me: Yeah, that's it.
GP: Is it going to be loud enough?
Me: *smiling* Yeah, don't worry about it.

~Ten minutes later~

GP: Uh, can you turn that thing down a little?

Haven't tried the IP series yet. Still not sold on the digital power amp technology, but that says more about me than it does about the technology! The Bergies are punchy as hell, and they sound great with any amp (I used to run an Ashdown ABM thru my rig before I got the T-Funk. No coloration from the speakers - the amp's character comes through, and, yeah, it will do "Old Skool").

Several months ago, I spent an afternoon trying out Berg 1x12cabs with my bass and head, and the thing I remember most is that I didn't hear the boxes, especially through the IP, just the sound of bass blooming effortlessly into the room as clear as a bell.

When I plucked across the end of the fingerboard the sound was warm and rich - thick, yet articulate; when I plucked nearer the bridge, the sound was more biting, bell-like, and percussive.

I'd be very interested in hearing what an IP112 would sound like paired with an HT115.

I'd be even more curious to play my upright through an IP4x8 with a soft dome tweeter - if only such a beast existed.
