iPhone 5 has been unveiled...

If Apple made hamburgers instead of personal communication devices, you would get only the bun the first year, then a bun and patty the next year, then a bun, patty, mustard and mayo the next year, then a bun, patty, mustard, mayo, and pickle the next year, and on and on.

What a scam.

I have in iPad2 and a Droid. And I'm not replacing either one for a long, long time. To hell with these scam artists.

This is the sort of nonsense I'm talking about. It's like people are fanboys of hating Apple, as well as fanboys of Apple. Both are equally silly.

I absolutely agree. There have been similar threads in the past about iPhones, and I've never been negative. For many people, iPhones are perfect for them. I get that and respect it.

This thread was about the iPhone 5, and how it didn't offer us anything new that other smartphones haven't been doing for a year or more. That's all. I don't think that's really debatable either. Big screen, LTE, HD video capture, etc.... It's all been done. What did Apple really give their users with the iPhone 5. That's why I started the thread. If I were an iPhone user, I'd feel slighted (again). The 4S was a whole bunch of nuthin', and the 5 isn't much more, IMHO.

So the iphone is just as good as the industry leading non-iphone designs, but because it doesn't present some novel and otherwise unavailable new gimmick iphone users should feel slighted? Does not compute.

Regarding your battery comment, I easily get a full day out of my GS2. I plug it in once a day, before bed. It's rare I use it so much during the day I need to juice up. Not unheard of, but rare. On the GS3, the battery specs far oveshadow the iPhones. No idea if that will translate into real-world advantages or not though. Obviously, the big 4.8" screen is a battery sucker on the Android.

Yeah, I can only comment on my own experience.

I don't doubt those that say the Android OS is unstable, but I've personally never had stability issues. Currently, I'm running a modded ROM and kernel, but for the longest time I used a stock GS3 with stock GB. Never had stability issues.

There's plenty of them that have issues nobody is making this up.

I was never an ipod or iphone fan. I think they are pretty lame. Flashy, yes. The best? I don't think so. I will gladly take a GS2 OR 3 anyday. I think the whole iphone thing is more of a fad than actual purchase for functionality. I can't tell you how many girls I've seen with white iphones in pink otter boxes, or men with black iphones in belt clips. Its kinda funny because hipsters love them but everything about them is conformity and indifferent. Learn how to utilize Android. You will be much happier

So because people buy iPhone and then put one of the best cases on it in their favorite color they are???..... What exactly

Hardware specs or "rootability" mean nothing to most people. They don't mean much to me either, and I'm a techie - I've never had any interest in jailbreaking my iDevices. It's all about responsiveness, user experience and software. On those metrics, Apple's got everyone beat.

Their UI is simple, consistent and ubiquitous, they've got far more in the way of apps and content than any other platform, and their feature set is more comprehensive (to the degree that every other phone maker copied it).

Still, the iPhone 5 is an evolutionary upgrade. 4G and the bigger screen are nice, but not groundbreaking. Nothing Apple have released since the sad passing of Steve Jobs has been new or groundbreaking, they've just been new versions of existing products. They need to release something that's actually a completely new product soon, or people will start thinking that they're sitting on their laurels instead of innovating in the same way they always have, and that the loss of Jobs had had a severe negative effect on their ability to innovate.

Agreed, except I'd go as far as to stay they haven't released anything ground breaking even before he died.

I never said that. I said that you can't do all the things that an iphone theoretically can't do, without rooting.

Honest question here: what is it that you can do with an Android based phone that you would be unable to do with an iPhone?

I love the idea of open source and being able to modify it etc. But if you don't want to have to invest the time and effort to do that, and you don't need the extra functionality of writing your own scripts of rooting etc then it's not really an advantage is it? Like a guy with a 3kw amp hooked up to a pair of 8x10's playing at bedroom volume in his apartment.

I think Android is the perfect platform for people who's hobby is messing with their phone, just like Linux is the perfect platform for folks who's hobby is messing with their OS. For people who just want to use their phone and not have to mess with it, Android (in my experience) is not on par.

Bingo

Funny, I've always considered them less an innovator and more a REFINER of existing product, not one core product they offer was a first to market. Well, at least has not been for a long time. the iMac notwithstanding, but it too was just a refinement of the original mac in ooh-ah packaging. I give them props for design, integration and wow factor, but not a whole lot for innovation.

This I agree with. Without the whip cracking a-hole at the helm, I fear they are starting to list a little off their focus.

I'm thinking the iPhone was at least innovative along with the ipad

There are several that come to mind. The first is choosing a keyboard. This isn't just aesthetic, I use Smart Keyboard Pro on my Android, and it has a multitude of options, best being auto-text, like BlackBerrys have, where it automatically changes words to predefined words. "u" --> "you" for example. This is completely editable. I can set it to change "Eric" to "Greek God With A Huge Penis" if I want to. Although that would be a lie. ;)

The options for e-mail clients and calendar clients are much broader for Android. At least they used to be a few years ago. I'm not sure if that's changed.

How about using my phone as a simple USB drive? I plug it in, via simple USB, and it shows up as a drive. SO much easier than iTunes, IMO.

Then there are widgets. Widgets make smartphone life easier. Iphones don't allow widgets.

How about the replaceable battery? As I said in a previous post, I have a spare battery at home on a dedicated charger. If my battery poops out, it takes all of 30 seconds to swap it out for a full charge. I throw the dead one on the charger, and in a few hours that one is at 100% as well.

Let's talk about removable storage. My phone gladly accepts MicroSD cards. They show up immediately in the File Manager. Simple, and amazingly absent in iDevices.

I know Flash has gone the way of the dino, but many sites still rely on it. Works just dandy on my phone. Not so much on an iPhone.

In the more aesthetic region the biggest one is the custom launcher. A launcher is basically a "skin". it's what you see of the GUI. I can use one of multiple launchers available, and tweak it however I see fit. I can change icons for individual apps, I can rename 'em, or remove the text as a whole.

Look up Tasker for Android. It's an incredible app, and it almost wholly automates your phone, based on your calendar, your clock, hell, even your GPS location. it does incredible things. iPhone (as far as I know) has nothing even remotely similar.

These are just the first things I was able to think of. Gimmie a few and I'll think of more. I may not be 100% accurate, because I haven't owned an iPhone since my 3GS, so if I'm wrong on some counts, I apologize.

1. IPhone does have autotext....

2. Not sure if that changed?

3. I'll give you the USB DRIVE, though I think iTunes is intimidating at first, I hated it and apple when I plugged in my girlfriends first iPod, but it works great.

4. Widgets

5. You'll need those double batteries just to make it through the day, I guess that could be a cool feature to have, I do however like the solid enclosed-ness of the iPhone tho.

6, remove able storage? I guess if your counting counting features it is one more than the iPhone, only thing I can think it useful for is going from phone into a camera or a printer or something.
But everything I do is automatically on my computer, anything I need to print I email to my printer.

They've released two phones in a row with only slight improvements / modifications. Each time Apple charged how much for them?

It's not about "gimmicks" or "novelty". But creating a buzz over a new device, only to find out it's remarkably similar to old devices seems a little crazy to me. It makes me think of Harleys, and how they make very few changes year to year and essentially scoot along on their name and only little substance.

It didnt happen to my Droid Incredible when I dropped it on the sidewalk going 25mph.

The only issue Ive had with my Incredible is that after I dropped it the last time, I think I messed something up with the speaker.

One reason I wont get an iphone is that I use my phone as an mp3 player, and I dont want to use itunes on my computer.

THIS JUST IN YOU CANNOT BREAK A DROID SCREEN!!!

I dropped my iPhone out of my pocket going 70mph on my motorcycle no cracked screen who has the bigger epenis now

I believe something similar is available for iphone.

Can't speak to this one.

One for the Android, if it's true one cannot do so. Not sure.

.

I f***ing hate widgets. And even with them turned off as much as possible sans rooting my battery life is still crap. Can't imagine how poor it'd be with them on.

And if you aren't able to get to a charger several times in a day? Stock battery lasts maybe 3 hours. If I have to buy a docking station and 2-3 extra batteries (both for home and for work) that 1. isn't exactly convenient & 2. sort of negates the the cost advantage.

I always thought this was a huge advantage. But at this point I find it difficult to imagine using more than the 32 or 64g built in on an iphone. If you want to buy a 100+gig microsd and need that much storage I admit it's an advantage. I'm not sure how many folks would need that, and I do not personally.

True, but I loathe flash so I avoid any sites using it if at all possible now (when I am on android).

Look, I hate Apple as a company. I'm the exact opposite of a fanboy. But it pisses me off to hear people acting like anyone who chooses differently from them must be some style obsessed hipster. Both platforms have strengths and weaknesses. Choose the one that suits you best, and stop acting like choosing a different phone than you is a moral failure.

And bingo was his naaaaammoooooo
