Where could I find details about the differences between versions of the Xerograph Deluxe over the years?
There are only two actual "versions." The first version has 5 knobs. The second version has 6 knobs (the additional knob lets you control where the filter sweep ends when using an expression pedal). It's true there are some small differences in component quality over time (the newer builds being nicer), but these changes are not indicative of "versions" so much as batches built by hand over many years.
The is also the Xerograph which (mostly) has 3-knobs, but that hasn't been built in a long time and your question asked about the Xerograph Deluxe.
Due to a small mishap it will actually take me a bit longer to test my new Divaricator with my existing pedal collection, but I was wondering if you guys can give me a bit of guidance/suggestions already in terms of using it with the XG. I've seen that some people only place their dirt in the DV's loop and place the XG right after it, whereas others also place the XG in the DV's loop. For crazy synthy filter sweeps, my gut feeling tells me to put dirt only in the DV's loop and my XG after it, but I was wondering how other's here on talkbass use their DV in a classic synth pedal chain (octaver-fuzz-filter)... or do you just use it as an in-chain pedal, e.g. after your dirt as an enhancer/tone sweetener?
I personally don't like filtering my envelopes as it really chokes the "sweep", on one end or the other. I added dirt, as well other effects in the DV loop though, mostly using the clip exciter a tad. Brassmaster and standard fuzz seemed to really take advantage of the filtering. Many different uses on the DV though, even alone it can be fun.
XG = Xerograph? I don't often see that abbreviation.
I don't have a Xerograph, but I do have the Xerograph Deluxe. In my classic synth pedal chain, I place the XD before the Divaricator. In the loop of the Divaricator I run modulation and sometimes dirt. Not my XD.
Sorry, I meant XD (as in Xerograph Deluxe). Interesting, I was primarily thinking of using the DV for dirt in front of my XD (got it right this time!) but using it with modulation pedals after the XD also sounds tempting. I certainly need to give that a try.
It probably depends on what dirt you are running. For synth I use a Doom 2 or FrantaBit: the low-passed clean channel on the Doom 2 means I don't really want or need to do any crossover filtering. But if you were using something like the Iron Ether Oxide, which is a gnarly fuzz but--being a Brassmaster--has a somewhat hollow voice, then a Divaricator before the XD might make sense. Of course, this also depends on the suboctave feeding the fuzz and XD. I find a Subterranea, an Octabvre MKII, and an Octabvre MKIII compliment different fuzzes in different ways.
But yeah, definitely explore modulation like phaser and chorus. The Polytope doesn't need a Divaricator so much because of its built-in filtering (though it can still benefit from the Divaricator's exciters), but I have had great success looping my phaser.
And my overdrives and distortions, which I run after the XD, are also fun to loop with the Divaricator. But these aren't part of my synth engine.

I use the Divaricator primarily as a boost, with the bottom three knobs all at roughly 2:00. Crossover is in the low mids. I don't always use the exciters, but when I do I only use the growl (right now the growl is on).
I've got my synthy, low octave stuff before the Divaricator, and a Fairfield Accountant, Scorpion, Xerograph Deluxe, and Polytope in the loop. I've found that in a band mix, distortions, choruses, filters etc. always make my lows soft (even with clean blends), and the lows are where all the energy is. The Divaricator guarantees that my effected tone will always be clear, and my uncolored low end will not only be present, but boosted.
Dramatic filter sweeps are always less dramatic when my highs fight the guitars/vocals and my low mids get eaten by the filter. I like to have a relatively narrow, audible frequency range where the "sweep" or the "quack" of the filter resonance sits, while my lows continue to push the energy of the band as a whole.
