Couldn't resist. I went ahead and ordered an Arcing Prisms. I wouldn't say the demos that exist for it are great, but there are enough snippets of cool sounds that I think I'll find something fun to do with it. I also have never owned an expression pedal, but I think I'll get one to try with this. I love Taylor's creativity with these pedals.

How "non-SE" are you looking for? Lol!

I've had the blue Nimbus for awhile but I may be putting it up for sale soon as it hasn't been used in a couple of years.

I had a FrantaBit for a minute but it was too much pedal for me (as is the case w/ most IE products)

Their BugCrusher08 is similar to the Franta. I'm the same way though, although it's changing more than one thing at a time, I really enjoy the dream crushers 1 knob variable

I cannot think of one...

The 3leaf Octabvre mkii, Doom 2, & Chromatron is a lovely modular synth combo, very smooth & warm but no where near as wet, nasty, & lush as the IE dynamic duo

Yes, I love filter, octaves and fuzz. Tried many and love the Cypher the best.

I run the filter and sensitivity high, but the 3 different sources are the cleanest I've played, pretty foolproof (thankfully)

Having said that, I do agree that this specific combo actually sounds like a full on synth, more so than any of the others I have tried (or heard). I wonder if the Octabvre/D2 + XD combo would sound similarly convincing? The D2 is the only pedal I've heard get into really true synth-like distortion at either high or low gain (notwithstanding the Uni and Octo oscillators on the SubT); I suspect the wetness of the XD would bring out the best of the 3Leaf combo, and get into similar synth heaven as the Dynamic Duo.

The 3leaf Octabvre mkii w/ Doom 2 into the XD is a very nice trifecta but the sounds offered from 3leaf units just dont compare to the robust character of the Subterranea.

Even with the tone knob on the mkii fully clockwise for that gritty Mutron sound, the Doom 2's sawtooth like waveform isn't as sharp or pronounced as the synth channels on the Subterranea.

The sawtooth octo-synth on the Subterranea in particular is incredibly brassy & has become my favorite of the waveforms, though each of the three have their charm.

The Doom 2 on low gain settings is probably the most synth-like fuzz on the market especially in the upper register of the neck where that upper octave becomes most apparent but to me it's best utility is in the ways it accentuates an octaver &/or envelope filter, it adds a gentle crispiness to your tone but even with the gain dimed it doesnt cross the threshold into an abrassive or nasty territory... it has a polite quality to it which I think is unique among dirt pedals.

I love the 3leaf pedals & the modular synth combo (Octabvre, Doom 2, Chromatron) is extremely smooth but I find them to be tame & somewhat limited compared to the XD & Subterranea which I feel has a wider range of expressive potential, just my opinion of course.

I agree there is a gritty and nasty quality to the oscillators in the SubT that seems hard to replicate. I started with the sawtooth waves when I first got it, but over time my preferences have changed; these days I like a blend of the narrow pulse on the octo synth (set for about 1-3 o'clock), and square wave on the uni synth (anywhere from 9-12 o'clock). And for maximum synth nastiness, I keep the octave's filter turned up a hair past 3 o'clock. It's a HUGE sound from just a single pedal, and largely impossible to get elsewhere (from what I can gather)!

I have one on my soundcloud, but listening back it's nothing how I have it set today, I think I recorded it right when I bought it. I'll have to see if can do some more. I can get similar, and almost a more liked sound, with a BEAD>sub blaster (or reverse those orders) with a chrometron up front, but that's triple the cost

Best synth tones I've gotten come from a signal chain that looks like this:

Hard Compression from Empress Bass Comp -> Octabvre or Cog T47 -> Foxrox Octron 3 with upper octave mixed with fundamental -> xerograph deluxe -> chorus (providence anadime) or phaser (phase 95)

I've been doing synth sounds lately by using a Second Sound Unisyn which outputs CV --> Pittsburgh Modular Taiga - tracks fast even down to low B, and you can use CV goodness to modulate whatever you want...
