Iron Ether Appreciation Society

I just wish my Xerograph Deluxe would arrive from wherever it is in the Canada Post dimensional rift. We're coming up on the 2 month anniversary of it clearing customs.

You’ll just have to factor that waiting time into your flip price. Just think of the potential lost income from interest on your “investment” :greedy:

Ive always sold my second hand pedals at under new price by a little bit or a lot depending on what it is (and how cheap / needed it is) - I figure as soon as it’s been bought it loses 25%… if it’s not something everyone wants then I just sell it for whatever I can get. I’d rather people use it than it sit with me collecting dust *shrug* only had a polytope but sold that for less than what I bought it for cos figure someone else could use it more and they were still paying a decent price

Hello all, avid Iron Ether user here (I've got 5 pedals dual Locked on my board).

I'll probably sound like the bad guy here, but on the note of higher selling prices - you pay the price for the convenience of having it sooner than Taylor will make one. And if you want to resell it you won't lose much money (maybe even make a little back).

There's a line where it's too much like $1000 for a Polytope, but $200 above selling price is the natural progression of a sought after, low volume, boutique item. If that bothers you, wait for one to appear in Taylors shop.

I would go out on a whim and say that it's not cool to buy 5 of the same pedals directly from IE and scalp them. Buying them on the aftermarket on Reverb or whatever is however fair game.

Buy the pedal with the ambition to actually use it, try the pedal, decide if it has a place in your collection/board, sell the pedal.

(Remember to factor in shipping costs, selling fees, packaging, and whatever else could be entailed in the sale.)

As you'll notice on Reverb, Bananana has produced enough Tarariras to stagger the price increase. Even the Chase Bliss Mood has started to lower in price because there's new pedals available.

If you have patience you'll eventually find a price you understand. And... there's nothing wrong with selling for a little profit?

Be well and happy pedal hunting,

John

A pedal is only worth what a person is willing to purchase said pedal for. It's basic economics. The buyer is just as much at fault than the seller. As much as I try to sell pedals at fair/good market prices, I have contributed to the problem by purchasing multiple $200/ea boutique pedals for $400-450/ea on the used market because of convenience and rarity. Is it wrong? It may be considered that way to some but no one seems to blame the buyer. It's almost always the seller that gets the flack. Ultimately, we need to stop buying pedals at these exorbitant prices but... That's not going to happen any time soon! The only thing that will drive down IE pedal prices (IMO) is more supply and a limit of one per customer. I'm not sure what else can be done by Taylor in order to end the high used market prices.

My favorite thing of all time is the silly rules. :roflmao:

You can sell it for whatever you want but only if you bought it on a Tuesday and were inspired to write at least 3 songs with it, but you are bad man if you buy 5 just to flip.

:rollno: I hate to say it, but it's the same thing...just a different justification to your conscious.

Ultimately, at the end of the day...once you pay for something you are free to do whatever you want with it. There is nothing illegal or even immoral about making money on your property if you are able to. Heck, if you want...you can break it into a million pieces, resell it for double, use it and be happy...or put it on a shelf and make a shrine to it. It's yours!!!! If you've got that ticket to the sold out show that everyone wants, you can be the guy to sell it for $500 or you can be the guy that hooks up a friend or another fan at face value...or you can rip the ticket up and leave an empty seat at the show.

I'm not a fan of the reselling thing at higher money because it is exploiting our fandom (and builders' work) for someone else's profits, and I don't know about you, but I don't like to be exploited and taken advantage of...especially by people who are supposed to be a part of the same community. That's the thing...there's nothing someone can say that will make those of us who loathe the practice to say....no you are cool, go for it, chase those dolla billz. But hey, we all know people like that who will charge a friend a little extra cause that's who they are. Just cause you bought something with the intention of writing beautiful music with it, when you list it for $50 over what you paid, you are no different than the guy who bought it with the intention of making a quick $50. Own it so those of us who don't want to do business with you will know what you are all about...stop justifying it and hiding your intentions.

Us is you and your karma police, prone to judge people and cherish their silly middle-men fantasy. As an overseas buyer, my real-life numbers are different than yours, deal with it or don't, think i'm stealing builders' money while i'm a regular direct-customer of them, ask any of them if i ever bought 2 of the same pedal, ask bass gear nuts like i am if i'm not regularly selling or trading sought-after pedals for less what's they're worth including their original price, on TB, Basschat, Reverb or anywhere else, find one friend of mine i ever ripped-off (! really ?!?), i just don't care.

I'm normal people and a gear nuts. My pockets aren't as big as my passion. Sometimes making profit, sometimes losing money, sometimes price is no object because someone else is nice, and happy. Get how it'd be handy if people would behave faithfully to manichean schemes, but most of time i'm afraid they don't. They do live instead.

Get too how these endless different ways of seeing things are being quite boring, and don't fit what's the IE pedals thread is about. Sorry again, just found a handy feature to not feed that kind of arguing ever again.

@Taylor Livingston Selling my Polytope was a huge mistake, any clue for a future Polytope release ?

This dead horse is really taking quite the beating..

Some people are in a postion to hook up others when they re-sell, some aren't, often because of extra costs associated with shipping international. I'm sure most folks would love pay less and have the opportunity to pass along pedals they don't want to keep at a decent price.

On the IE front, back when I first found out about Taylor's work, you could buy direct and have him customize your pedal for 15$ extra with minimal wait time. I think at some point even Prymaxe was an IE dealer so they were way more obtainable. Hopefully in the near future the supply chains start to stabilize and builders that want to ramp up production are able to, driving down used prices. Whoever hasn't tried IE products should give 'em a try if the opportunity comes by!

And I'm still waiting on the tremolo @Taylor Livingston once talked about to replace the Cygnet! Maybe that became the Arcing Prisms??

Agreed. There are clearly different thoughts on the matter and neither side is going to convince the other side differently. Apparently people will also continue to take this personally and explain why their situation is unique and worthy of justification.

I'll try to let this be my last post contributing to the dead horse and if folks want to continue to discourse it, we can take it to PM.

I will entertain this last reply though...
As an overseas buyer, my real-life numbers are different than yours, deal with it or don't,

Just to be clear, I have nothing against you or your practices or what it costs to buy things overseas. Yes, of course things cost more when you have to deal with international shipping. As such, I tend to only deal with international transactions when there is no other option...so, yes...I choose to not deal with it.

I'm not sure why you are taking it so personally and getting so defensive if you are not someone who buys to make money (and I believe you that you are not)? Obviously anyone who wants to transact with you will have to pay more for the goods you are selling because you are overseas (unless they are local to you?). I don't pay too close attention to your sales and if you want to factor in taxes and stuff into your selling price that's fine and your call. If someone points at one of your listings and it is listed for more than what the pedal sells for as new, then yeah...a lot of us are just going to move on. Usually when I see something is overseas, it helps explain why the price is higher...but that doesn't change the fact that the price is higher...so again, we just move on.

When the topic comes up and people start discussing the practice of economics in the pedal community you have to expect people to have differing opinions...and let's face it, the "capitalism always wins" side of the fence puts dollars as the priority and whenever money is the driving factor, all else falls at the wayside and that's kinda sucky when you are trying to share in a hobby with other passionate people.

side note (not that it matters, but it was just funny) - the irony is not lost on my that in your reply you say ..."ask any of them if i ever bought 2 of the same pedal"... and then later in the post you ask about purchasing a second polytope because selling your last one was a mistake. No knock against you and I don't believe you are looking for one to flip, it just made me chuckle when I noticed that is all :) - seriously though, sell your stuff at whatever price you want and for whatever reasons you want. We don't deserve explanations and the explanations don't accomplish anything anyway.

Frantabit on reverb for 375 . You have musicians like Janek gwizdala talking about how Integral it is to his sound . And it’s been how long since you could buy one on the website (I know about COVID ) just saying it’s literally the only one for sale . So yeah you can charge whatever you want . But you would be a fool to pay that price .

I think the one on Reverb now is literally the one someone posted about being well priced and then Taylor commented about the price gouging...
