Irritating CL Posting

Not sure why this really irritated me. I'm not looking to join another band, but surf CL just to see what is happening. I would think that loving the style of music and playing it well would be more important than your gear. It just seems that these guys are limiting themselves by being snobby.

If you don't understand what they're looking for, and audition with a look and sound that aren't fitting what they're looking for, you probably wouldn't understand why you wouldn't be getting the job.

As soon as I hear low b I know how old it's NOT. Kinda like Mannix using a cell phone-2 worlds collide.
If you don't know who Mannix is it would explain why the 5 string reference makes no sense to you.

Yeah, they're definately looking for a specific style bassist. The first time I looked at the ad struck me the wrong way and got me a tad on the annoyed side. That band they had a link to, The Golden Gods, they're pretty rockin'! I'd like to be in a band like that just to have some fun, nothing serious.

Not that has anything to do with Mannix- but yesterday I saw a Javelin SST in full 1971 Green paint down the street from me.

Not only were there Solid State amps in wide use in the 70's, but I believe that Alembic created the first 5 string bass in 72 or 73, so even a five would fit the period.

If they are looking to emulate The Band they better specify a fretless bass player while they are at it, same with Bad Company, although they aren't mentioned.

I agree they are looking for a particular thing, and that is their right, but to defend them on historical accuracy is kind of weak.

The actual post doesn't annoy me, but it does make me think that these guys don't actually remember the musical era that they are in love with. I might be wrong.

I think you're missing the point.

If you're going to have a Led Zeppelin cover band, your guitar player is going to be playing a Les Paul for most of the songs- Yes, Page recorded with a Telecaster, a Strat and numerous other guitars- but the image that Zeppelin conjures is Jimmy Page with a sunburst Les Paul. You can get away with a Danelectro for "Kashmir" but Page will still play a LP for that.

Maybe I'm just too young- but I don't remember anyone (and don't recall seeing any footage) of any big bands using SS bass rigs until the 80s. I don't recall seeing 5 string basses until the 80s.

When I think of that 70s vibe- I'm thinking a P or a J (natural or sunburst), an Ampeg or Sunn in the backline, a wide tooled leather strap, shoulder length (or longer) hair and denim.

It's not about what was theoretically available- it's about the popular image of that timeframe. The idea of putting together a project like this is not to suit the musician- it's for the musician to suit the band.

Heh...I did think the ad was a bit pretentious, but at least they are stating up front exactly what they're looking for...in a big city like San Francisco, they can probably get away with being picky like that. I guess I appreciate an ad like that more than some really generic listing like "Need a bass player to play rock, must have experience and good gear," and then show up only to find out that my Kustom Groove amp wasn't cool with them.
