Is a limiter what I need?

I'm going to be playing doom metal with a lot of fuzz and was wondering how I could avoid feedback destroying my cab/amp between songs. I run a Carvin B2000 into an Avatar 410 @ 4Ohms.

I know my amp has a built in limiter (or so their website says) but from my last experience with Carvin I won't take my chances. Would I need a compressor/limiter on my stompbox effects or as a rack for this problem?
 
Oh. That is completely different world of music than I am used to. Noise Gates work to tame the noise from your instrument and chain of pedals. They do work, but if your instrument/chain is already quiet, probably not useful.
 
For what you want it probably doesn't matter but it can be useful to run a compressor (Pedal) before your distortion to get a more even sound (distortion) across your strings. Depending on your bass and how much gain you have set on your distortion, you may notice that your B string sounds a little more clipped than your G string. A compressor set with a high ratio ~ 9:1 will help match the gains of each string going into the distortion giving a more even sound.Feedback is much easier to get with a compressor in line.


Noise gates are great for metal!!! The Boss Noise Suppressor uses your clean bass sound to trigger the threshold of the gate and you can run any super gain laden distortion off of it's own effects loop. Set the threshold so it triggers just from your clean bass signal background noise with your hands muting the strings. From there you can cut dead silent no matter what kind of sick distortion you have going to create feedback. The feedback will continue if you wish because your bass strings will still be moving driving over the gate threshold, but when you want to stop, just put your hands on the strings and poof! Silence. It's sooo sweet for metal. Silence helps bring power and definition to your sound when it kicks in.

The feedback will be WANTED between songs. Kind of for dramatic effect. Like how the band Weedeater starts all of their shows; a massive ocean of feedback that leads into the first riff.

Noise gate? From what I've heard (and tried) they don't do much of anything.

If you want to match Weedeater's showmanship you need to add puke to the menu. :p

A noise GATE is different than a noise suppressor. The gate is usually a hard open/close type of function, suppressor can work similarly but usually targets noise frequencies as opposed to your entire signal, thus doesn't have as dramatic of an effect.

If you really want to chop up your sound and heavily gate between notes consider a gated distortion/fuzz/drive effect.

The Boss Noise Suppressor IS a gate. They called it a Suppressor but in fact it's a pretty fancy gate. Hard chops and all....
 
When you want a swelling wall of feedback, you want to have as much gain (signal boost, not necessarily distortion) after your pickups as possible, but:
a) You don't want to rip up speakers, like you said.
b) You want to be able to switch it off for the times you don't want crazy feedback, hiss, and other problems.

For the gain, pretty much any signal-boosting pedal will do--distortion, OD, an EQ with boost, most compressors, etc. Distortion also causes compression, BTW, and that's why so many guitarists go that route. So the gain is easy, a $40 Danelectro pedal will do the job brilliantly.

Keeping the speakers from ripping up is the tough one, and yes I do think a hard limiter is what you need. The reason is that again you are trying to make the pickups as sensitive as possible by boosting the gain, to draw in and amplify the feedback, but you don't want an equivalent huge increase in the levels actually going to your speakers. Be aware that a lot of the bands that use insane walls of feedback are used to blowing and replacing speakers as a normal "cost of doing business", like buying strings. The problem is that good limiters are not common and not cheap. Also rack ones can't be disengaged easily when you transition from feedback to regular playing.

So the very best approach is to absolutely flatline your signal with one pedal. The whole point will be to totally smash your dynamics--that's why you want to be able to switch it off easily, i.e. pedal not rack. This should either be an extreme high-gain distortion, or a comp/limiter with an infinity:1 ratio available, set with an extremely low threshold.

This will not guarantee your speakers will be safe, but it's the best option available, unless you want to get into some seriously expensive gear.

A noise gate is not the tool you want, because what it does is shuts your signal off when the levels drop below a certain level--so they are usually used to prevent feedback.
