Escher was a truly great artist, however that cold, modernist style doesn't really do much for us.

Lots of people simply remember him for his mathematical and graphic based work, but a gallery we visited recently had a significant collection of his more realistic work, done during the time he spent living and traveling in italy.
We like this art more than his other style, but we have seen it done better.

We can appreciate his talent, but he's not one of our favourites.

We also don't consider him a modernist?! :hmm:

Dude most of those artists you mentioned didn't even know they were any good while they were alive. They just created their work because they felt it within them. And it just so happened that at the time there were a lot of rich people to finance them to do so because there was an appreciation of art back then. Not like today.

So it's probably not WHERE the artists are, but WHERE are the art appreciators? They're watching MTV, reading Gossip magazines and listening to Britney Spears and other pre-fabricated manufactured music. Today's society has totally corrupted the minds of the masses into being totally oblivious to what is real. The media is EVIL! No, just kidding. Modern society just stinks and we all need to take a look at ourselves and do something about it. Instead of going to the movies to see the latest blockbuster, go down to your local independent movie theatre and watch something made with integrity and meaning instead of being made purely for profit. Go out and see a local band, and if you like them, support them, instead of sitting there on your couch watching MTV or CNN.

ART IS NOT DEAD! WESTERN CULTURE IS!
