Is art dead?

man art is not dead of course. those fellas did what was innovative in their era. artists now do whats innovative (which is much harder) in this era. I like contemporary artists myself. Mark ryden, joe sorren, brad holland... I could name a lot. What is art? There is no answer to that. If nowadays you cant find anything to your taste ok bad for you. But I enjoy today's art. Very much. And I totally abhor Van Gogh. Yyyuck..

His "Xeroxing" of a single woman's face was probably never more apparent than in this painting, "Hylas And The Nymphs." Link Removed

Sir Edward Burne-Jones had the same problem; he had an affair with one of his models, then painted her face onto almost every woman he put on canvas after that.

Art is dead, yet art sales are up overall. People are buying Thomas Kincaid (the "Painter of light" guy) by the truck load, and that's all he does is paint the same scene over and over and over again. Small town in winter, light streaming through the windows... bleh. He's the Kenny G of the art world. Pandering to the lowest common denominator, and sells like crazy.

I believe that our popular culture doesn't have the attention span that generations previous to us had. We are constantly barraged by and endless stream of faster and faster images, and can't be bothered with focusing on only one for any length of time.

come on folks.
those of you saying art is dead, or asleep, or taking a break. you ARE NOT PAYING ENOUGH ATTENTION.

there are some fabulous artists out there now, you just have to look. here in SF the galleries stay open late on the first thursday of each month, plus they hand out free wine. lots of fun, and i've seen some amazing work. off the top of my head, here's a couple of my favorites:

alp ozberker

get out of your house, go to a gallery or two, you'll see something.

here, a friend of mine has some work up at Link Removed don't worry, it's not porn. no pop ups or nothing. i gaurentee it. you might like some of the stuff in there. anthony mangicapra has some good stuff on there.

just remember, the art industry isn't like the music industry, you don't get signed... you have to find art, it's not gonna be dropped in your lap.

I'm an artist and while I make a good living from it, I'd hardly categorize myself as an artist anyone would recognize...though perhaps one day, with alot of luck and alot of work. Most of my stuff is junk (I'm very self critical).

You can view some of my stuff at Link Removed My wife is graphic designer and is completely redoing our website, so most of my work is not up there yet. But I've been doing it professionally for about 25 years.

However, there are a great deal of artists that stand out...Ray Harris Ching, Andrew Wyeth (the entire Wyeth family for that matter), Robert Bateman,etc.

Of course those artists are realists and the art snobs don't appreciate them at all. To each his own.

I'm the "professional" artist previously mentioned. I've got a website of a lot of my images at http://www.bryanrtyler.com , and there are countless talented artists still working today. Just some fantastic painters that come to mind are Eric Fischl, Jenny Saville, Anselm Kiefer, Gerard Richter, and Wayne Thiebauld (I probably misspelled all of those). Let me know what type of art you're looking for and I can probably listed dozens of great artists working in that field.

I wanna know when a piece of 3/4" pipe bent slightly to the left and painted red was considered art. Stupid modern/impresionistic art.

I blame it on Andy Warhol. Of course, I also blame Reality TV, a myriade of 3rd world economic problems, and Diet Coke w/ Lemon on Andy Warhol, so take that as you will.
