Is elegance a thing when it comes to basses?

The bottom Rick is definitely ELEGANT ! I wouldn’t be shy to bring it everywhere and in any situation.

Just the necessary stuff, not overloaded.

Do you know if the playability and comfort are better on this bass compared to a 4001 or a 4003 ?

If you're referring to the 4004, it is light years beyond a 4001 or 4003 regarding comfort. It wraps itself around my body and is glorious to play. It's my best sounding bass. If only it were a five string.

I would say so.

Hello good folks of the TB:

What defines elegance in a bass guitar, and should it even exist? In this modern era of rat-rod/road-worn basses - does elegance still have a place?

So here are a few basses that I would consider to be elegant. Of course, one person's jewel is always another person's yawn - it has been that way forever, and I don't see it changing.

No discussion of elegant would be complete without including the craftsmanship of my friend Jens Ritter. It doesn't need to be fancy coffee table wood to make an impression. The right fingerboard wood brings it all together:

No doubt about the fact that Keith Roscoe does amazing and elegant work. Keith has built two custom basses for me and I will forever be a fan of his work. Not my bass:

Well, what can you say about Rob Allen? Rob built me a custom "mouse" in 2004 and I can't even begin to express how elegant his basses are. Not my bass:

In my opinion Andrew Drake has made some pretty incredible, and yes elegant instruments. This is Wilma:

This is just a tiny sampling. So let's hear it - is elegance a thing or is it a thing of the past? Post your thoughts here.
Coarse elegance has its place its hand-in-hand with art…. just because the rat rod /road worn guys seem to be more abundant won’t make the nicer stuff obsolete…. and who knows in 10 years the players might look back and laugh at the people that actually purchased brand new relict instruments for more price than a new pristine one.

James Krenov, long time instructor in the College of the Redwoods furniture making program, stated something along the lines of details should be removed until the piece is no longer functional.

I'm all about that with instruments, tools, and functional items, including furniture, that I make myself, for my own use or on commission.

My only disagreement with the post above, is the plastic plate has a genuine function and is not superfluous on many instruments. ;)

The plastic plate’s function is one that isn’t necessary if you plan ahead and make different choices. There are plenty of instruments that don’t need a “pickguard”, because the design is a bit different. A pickguard is a sign that economy took priority over elegance. You may like that look, and there’s nothing wrong with it, but it isn’t elegant.

The mighty Alain Caron F Bass Signature Fretless. 28 fret fretless, cutaway up to here, a master's instrument, and as single-minded as a Carrera GT. Breathtaking, and to hear AC make this thing walk and talk makes me think I don't know squat about bass playing. A perfect pairing of artist and instrument.

Well said and I wholeheartedly agree.

That little Spector precision bass drives me crazy !

Can’t imagine anything better than that in terms of punch, rumbling and playability.

Would you say the playability is better than a regular p bass ? And is it also lighter ?

The walnut one is not lighter than your average P-Bass, but it is more balanced so it leads to less fatigue from playing. It's like 9lbs. The playability is monumentally better... you could play a barre chord on the 22nd fret if you wanted. It weighs the same as my 70 RI P-Bass but without the neck dive, so I don't ache after playing it.

The orange one is super light, like just over 7 lbs.

If you want a single P spector neck-thru and you want one that's light, order an NS-1 in a solid color but with empresswood wings. light as a feather. The tone is in the maple thru neck anyway, imo.
