Is Fender a scam?

You are not crazy, but that doesn't make Fender a scam. Many Squiers play well end sound excellent. So do many MIA Fenders. However, Squiers tend to have basswood and agathis bodies - less sought after body woods. MIA basses use ash and alders, which are more sought after. MIA necks are more likely to be mad of higher grade maple, and Squiers might have non-wood fingerboards. MIAs oftens have graphite rods in the necks. An MIA neck is less likely to dvelop problems over time. (i am not saying your Squier won't hold up.). Also, MIA basses are built at US labor rates as opposed to third-world labor rates.

Both lines have gems.

yeah, thats a good point. the USA quality of materials are probably much better. never really thought too much about that factor.

Aren't Squiers coming out of Indonesia now? I have a G&L, a Spector, and a Lakland all from Indonesia. All are fine instruments. The last new Squier I picked up - a jag - even managed to capture some of that "old Fender" vibe.

thats what im saying! I have owned a classic vibe, a vintage mod, and now i have a squier p bass special. they are all made in Indonesia and they have all been more than adequate instruments! The vintage mod, has the dunkin design pickups in it..Omg, for recording, that thing sounds, just amazing!

I have owned a couple of mia fenders. They were great, but from a final product point of view (not taking into account the cost of production), they were not worth 2 to 3 times as much as the cheaper made basses.

thats exactly what im getting at. I think in comparison. MIA and squier MII, Its just so closes in value and quality, play ability and even so close in sound. its just kind of like, wow, why am i paying so much for these instruments? though, fender has a history behind its name. they were one of the first company's to create an electric bass guitar. maybe its not a scam. but i think with time, like anything, things have changed.

My MIJs (2008 Geddy Lee and 2011 '70s P) are both superb instruments IMO and while they aren't as cheap as squiers or MIMs, they are a good bit less than MIAs and a fantastic bargain if you ask me.

But I don't think Fender's trying to pull a fast one. It's just that overseas manufacturing is getting better and since they don't pay their workers anything or have OSHA to deal with, they can produce goods for super cheap. and as time goes on- they get better at making stuff.

yeah, that sounds about right! I think you might have just nailed in on the head man. Oh well, i just wanted to see if i was alone on this view...i guess im defiantly not. which is great. thanks for all the good input everyone!

Regardless of Brand or Cost -

Some basses will "hit you" and you'll make a "connection" with and some wont.

I've played $5K jazz style basses... a showroom full of them. Some spoke to me, and some didn't.

Just because you found a decently built Squire that spoke to you doesn't mean the Fender American line is a "scam".

I have a $1K Fender American Standard Jazz that is a decent build and FANTASTIC sounding Jazz. Does that mean my other $4K instruments are a "scam" ?? No.

You get what you pay for. American labor cost more than overseas. Hand made cost more than production.
&
Wood is wood - it can always vary, even on expensive instruments... So perhaps you got a decent cut of wood that was assembled with a bit of decent skill. That doesn't mean the rest of the word of bass guitars that cost more than your $250 squire are all "scams".

:rollno:

yeah, im starting to realize that now, you guys have opened my eyes a little more. you are absolutely right though.. instruments are like people, some you connect with, and there are no two who are alike. :)

Let me just start off by saying i own a fender american standard jazz bass.

Really is that so? I do not see that bass on your profile. Damn you sold it fast tonight .

ill agree with that..i think it really is preference in a lot of cases. I just feel so discouraged that i like my 225 doallar bass more than i like my 14 hundred dollar one. it just makes me feel like i may have made the wrong decision.

It can be a bit upsetting when you spend that amount and you like the one that's not even 20% of the cost. The thing is, don't stick with the one that's expensive, stick with the one you like. I spent years searching for the right Fender Jazz for me - after more than 15 years of playing I found 'the one'. It was a MIJ 75 reissue - ash and bound blocked neck - loved it. Only problem? It was too heavy. I've played MIA (no deluxes though), MIM, MIK, MIJ, Squiers but that one particular MIJ 'spoke' to me. The thing is, I found a bass that fit me better, so I sold it. It's a search for the sound in my head, and I found a bass that better fit that than the MIJ Jazz. I recently acquired a 62 reissue MIJ jazz and it's ok. Once I tried Spector - it was like it fit me, rather than me trying to fit the bass. Everyone is unique - but it is a bit tough to correlate price vs quality, especially if you like a lower cost bass.

Sorry to ramble...

Squier makes a very nice bass for the price point. Never played one that felt as good as s a Fender.

Anyone else tired of the recent rash of Fender sucks, Squier is better threads? What ever happened to SX? Are they still around or was that last years flavor of the month?

I still love my SX. That things sings. Beautiful sustain. Its the only bass I have on my "do not sell" list.

Hey just made an observation . I myself have never found ANY squier that has held up on fit and finish , feel , tone or quality of pickups than my American Standard Precision . I have tried many at many shops . Please take my smart a-- post above lightly . :D

Peace
