Is funk making a comeback!?!?!?!

Goodness I hope so! Actually, a lot of that stuff is more disco, 'American Boy' is another good example. Most funk is fingerstyle, although there are rare exceptions. if you consider the Red Hot Chili Peppers funk, I could see why one might equate slap wit da funk. Good post brutha!

Absolutely, yes the funk is coming back in a big way.
My current line-up has been putting together a large amount of songs heavily leaning in this direction....70s disco and smooth funk influence
Loving some of the newer movie soundtracks of recent years also for this very reason.
In the words of Bootsy himself: 'Play on the one, and don't fake the funk', It is good to see we can still live by that

I think that is your perception. Mine is, A LOT of the funk I have heard and played is slap. RHCP is NOT the reason why slapping is equated to funk. Ever heard of Larry Graham or the Brothers Johnson? Take a listen and you will see.

Funk never went away. Radio just refuses to play it! Funk is abundant throughout the world! In fact, many of the original funk bands are still going strong after all these years! I will be attending a Funk Fest at the Hampton Coliseum tomorrow evening!

Scheduled to play include:
Morris Day & The Time
The S.O.S. Band
Zapp
Lakeside
Dazz Band
A Taste of Honey

Saw Dazz Band and ConFunkShun over the summer down at Virginia Beach!

Funk is alive and well!

No disrespect to Lady Gaga or Katy Perry but I have never heard any funk from them. Slap bass in their music does not automatically put their music in the funk zone.

I agree. whatever "funk" motifs and clichés find their way into current pop music are mostly the faint vestiges of the sampling revolution that hip-hop introduced over 20 years ago. I don;t care if you can find me a clip of George Clinton declaring how funky Gaga is - her music is disco-stiff, the anti-funk as far as i'm concerned.

We all know with enough marketing proclaiming such artist as the new school of funk people will eat it up.



The music coming from Lady Gaga and Katy Perry(at the time of this writing) is not funk nor is it funky.

I hope funk does come back to radio. There is without a doubt just as much slap funk as finger funk. When I was coming up in the 70's and very early 80's (when funk was at it's commercial peak) slap "was" the definition of "funk" because you simply didn't hear slap in any other style of music. Also, the slap creator was Larry Graham Mr. Funk himself. Finger funk is just as funky and a very nice alternative. Different songs require a different approach so you need to be able to funk both ways. But, in the end it simply depends on which style "grooves" you. :bassist:
