Those are all great bands that are, in my view, playing to very musically inclined audiences. Although they absolutely bring the funk, I think they are part of a niche and not representative of a central musical trend.

Disagree, unless that is your statement about the whole jam band scene in general, which then becomes arguable.

They play to an audience that 'the kids' are a part of, which does keep things very current. And also somewhat viable. But certainly not all of them are very musically inclined, a lot of them are just kids on drugs.

We have a local band that plays alot of funk.. great live show and there bass player is mind blowing....Also plays a CB bass

I feel the need to repeat this: There has ALWAYS been good artists making da Funk - what seems to be changing is that venues for this music are on the upswing: Club owner want to see folks dancing - and what is better to dance to than FUNK?? So, to me, the REAL news is that guys like me, who love playing funk, are getting some work in regional clubs.

No disrespect to Lady Gaga or Katy Perry but I have never heard any funk from them. Slap bass in their music does not automatically put their music in the funk zone.

While it's obvious that Lady Gaga is not funk per se, her music still has a lot of funk influences. Someone who regularly listens to funk (and I know for a fact that almost ALL bassists do) will not miss the funk elements (most usually guitar and bass) in her music. But yes, it's not funk. More along the lines of "hip-hop-funk" if I'm allowed to use that term.

they aren't FUNK influences per se. Like most current dance music, there is a direct lineage from DISCO music - the original degraded, rigid derivative of funk. Some of the instrumentation remained, but the feel was TOTALLY different. And it's MUCH easier to duplicate with machines than actual funk.

As much as I must try and keep an open mind, and open it even more as I age, I cant do the Gaga thing. Illusion is meaningless to me; and her schtick is much of that. ( I am the FREAK who would prefer to hear Ms. Germnotta bang out a hot jazz standard on the ivories, BUT ALAS, freaks dont pay)

[size=+1]Lettuce[/size]. Hey, thnx for tuning me onto this modern funk band! It does seem very technically correct, almost to the point of losing some of the funkiness oddly! But very, very nice.

Which means that to a purist, machines cant do funk atall. It almost needs a wee bit o human grease in the timings. THink of Bootsy's older basslines.

Not calling Lettuce a machine in the least Very very nice stuff. THNX Y'ALL!

And I am SO glad to hear folks are getting gigs making FUNK! Man, there is hope for us all.

The term funk is relative.Maybe your funk never left, but my funk from the late 60s and early 70s left and it's not coming back.
