Could be, but most of it is made with "fake" instruments nowadays, sadly.
Why don't people play the funk with real drums and bass? It sounds so much better.

Just curious as to who you listen to? What is your musical taste.

I'm all over the place. I was the only kid in Jazz ensemble listening to Children of Bodom right before a hotel gig . But right now I'm really into electronic music and pop stuff like Sam Sparro, Chromeo, Lady GaGa, Dam Funk, Samantha Jones, Esthero and Galaxy 2 Galaxy. I have the music on my iPod organized by genre and every few months I find myself more or less stuck on one playlist. Before this I was listening to a lot of contemporary funk, soul and other groove based music like Candy Dulfer, Jamiroqaui, Incognito, Kem, Meshell Ndegeocello. For a long time before that it was fusion jazz, which is easily the biggest playlist I have .

The funny part is that when I pick up a bass you'd probably swear I was an urban gospel bassist, haha! I'm not a beast like so many of them are but it's kinda just how I play.

There may be some period of time between huge outbreaks, but you can't get ever really get rid of it.

See, you're one of the few who have a wide variety of musical tastes. I'm quite sure you know how to search out good new music! There's more youths out there so closeminded that all they know is what their peers know and what's on radio! If they knew about genres like Funk, Jazz, Neo-Soul, etc., I'm quite sure the airwaves would reflect this.

Listen very carfully to all of Lady Gagas music its very funky like 70s slap bass funk/smooth jazz Katy perrys Claifornia girls has a slap bass track. I think it is and well that put a mile smile on my face

I hear a Hans & Dieter techno reverb more than anything else when I hear any of her music

The jam band scene is circulating a lot of these guys these days. It's grown so much out of the dead/phish thing.

Some bands know how to adapt to it, some can't. The fans are definitely some of the most open minded people, although their ability to articulate why isn't always uber coherent But the genre bending that is going on there is what excites me, and is where I make a lot of things happen.

And funk and jazz-funk is a cornerstone of a lot of it.

Oh yeah, Pimps of Joytime if that hasn't been mentioned.

I attended my first Rock and Roll concert in 1955, so I have been listening to music for several decades. I am a fan of many styles of music, and if you listen to to what is being played by popular performers today, there isn't much originality out there. However, Funk influences show up everywhere. I hear it in Gospel, Jazz, Latin, Reggae, and Afro Pop. Some artists like Prince have always played Funk. Yesterday I was listening to some Middle Eastern music on internet radio, and the Bass line was pure Funk! I think that as a musical influence, funk will always be in the mix.

Funk never left. Many people may have ignored it, but we the fans have had it in pop and Gospel music - especially Gospel - since the '70s.

I agree. whatever "funk" motifs and clichés find their way into current pop music are mostly the faint vestiges of the sampling revolution that hip-hop introduced over 20 years ago. I don;t care if you can find me a clip of George Clinton declaring how funky Gaga is - her music is disco-stiff, the anti-funk as far as i'm concerned.

Go-Go...back in the day there was a group named "The Three Pieces", their bassist Jerry Wilder went on to play on Doin da butt and Bustin Loose which are big hits for Chuck Brown. funky funky cat...got me backed up against the wall. Matter of fact that LP, Vibes of Truth was funky through and through..Donald Byrd being their mentor and all..

"Da Butt" was E.U., not Chuck Brown and I'm pretty sure it's Marcus Miller playing bass on that track (he produced it and it really sounds like him playing). If it wasn't Marcus then I would imagine it would be Sugar Bear (bassist and vocalist for E.U.).
