Is funk making a comeback!?!?!?!

I was checkin out WWOZ, New Orleans last night and the dj played some FUNKY, Syl Johnson...The bass on one particular track, was especially B*A*D ! ! ! Shoulda wrote the title down...
I'm the same way. If you check my ipod you will find healthy doses of Gospel, Contemporary Jazz, R&B, Funk, Str8 ahead jazz, fusion, salsa, Metal, Rap, Hip hop, Rock... the list goes on. Of course you will have your absolute fav's but, everything you listen to is relevant and will eventually find a place in your playing. Which makes you a better musician
"Da Butt" is by E.U and that is Marcus Miller on Bass. He produced the track and maybe even wrote the music.
Agree on the ratio.What, you mean we'll have figurative references to sex and a feeling of individualism and positive empowerment sneak into the lyrics now? Kids will learn to beleive in themselves more and not the societal driven "aspirations" now?
Musically, is there a tightly woven itnerplay between the musical voices, a keen sense of "rest" as a beat????

In fact, tis logically counter to Lady Gaga's very UNNATURAL schtick.
No, a slap bass line dont make Da Funk. I dont listen to Gaga, but my intellect tells me her MUSIC (not her) is Sir Noses's understudy.

We have a local band that plays alot of funk.. great live show and there bass player is mind blowing....Also plays a CB bass
I've always thought electronic music (which is in abundance now) would match hand in hand with funky basslines. Perhaps we'll see more of it over the next few years. A couple of good examples I can think of now are Around the World by Daft Punk and I Look to You by Miami Horror.
Wow, Funk is both slap and fingerstyle (No, this does not include Lady Gaga, LOL). So, all you slap-o-phobics are missing out on a TON of funk!

At this point I'm not sure whether the thread is about slap bass or funk music. Either way, I am not surprised to see any musical ingredient, after enjoying an initial ubiquitous period, then enduring a period of passe, eventually take its natural place as a part of music.
Seems like the very same thing has happened with analog synthesizers over the last three years or so.
I noticed the slap bass line in the Katy Perry tune a while ago, and I've been waiting to spring it on people who claim that no song gaining radio play these days has slap bass. The bassline sounds great in that song. Might not be funk.
Lady Gaga is doing fantastic work, perhaps a little derivative of Madonna's last ten years - but great anyway. Might not be funk.

I think that among live musicians (not electronic musicians, who sample more of the late 70s disco funk) late 60s to early 70s funk and soul has made a comeback in the past few years. Check out The New Mastersounds, The Bamboos, Breakestra, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Orgone, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and The Greyboy Allstars. These are all young guys playing old-school funk and soul and I'm glad because they are all doing it well!

Agreed. And as far as I'm concerned, funk never left. Lettuce, Soulive, Mastersounds, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe...
It's all good.
Those are all great bands that are, in my view, playing to very musically inclined audiences. Although they absolutely bring the funk, I think they are part of a niche and not representative of a central musical trend.
You are right, because the average young music listener probably thinks funk is the latest Usher or Kanye West record and has no idea who James Brown is, a crying shame...
Of course, there are many concepts of what Funk means.
I'll just say this: If the Funk ever goes out of the music, I'm done with it.
I don't care what genre, except Classical, I'm playing, but it's got SOME Funk in it. Funk is an essential component; without it, you got no soul, no groove.
