Is funk making a comeback!?!?!?!

Slap does not= Funk...go to the bass section of any music store..what you hear is NOT FUNK!
Can some slap= funk? Sure. But funk is groove and pocket. James Jamerson is the funkiest that ever lived and hell, he didn't even play with 2 fingers.
Alot of players mask their lack of funk with slap....please, no more octaves for me sir.

I hate to say it but there are some slap that does equal funk. And there are what is suppose to be finger style funk that isn't funky at all. It all comes down to the player.
Some thumping and plucking(what many today refer to as slap).
Man , I know this sounds cliché , but Larry Graham is the effin' man.

Check out Cee Lo Green...I heard a song of his a few years ago and it was great....his new internet hit F-you is jammin'....
These groups own groove!! A true testament that modern Soul/Funk are back and on the rise!
Also the Bamboos, Cadillac Jones (i guess they might be regional, but MAN when I put them in pandora I just love it), Jamiroquai. Amy Winehouse's BAND (note the emphasis

To those that are hatin on Lady Gaga, I am not necessarily disagreeing. But that said, Steve Wonder has been sampled by a lot of hip hop, Aerosmith's walk this way with Run DMC was a breakthough in crossovers, and imo it helps keep them relevant to a generation that I think normally wouldn't dish out the respect. This respect is huge in keeping things alive.
Many will not agree. But I do try to keep current both in music and music perspective. If I am to keep myself relevant in the scene, this thinking is critical.

Yes! Great news!! Lady Gaga is using slap bass in her arrangements. That can mean only one thing = her 15 min. are up!
Oh, and when I want to get the ladies dancing, I put some funk into my groove. (Fingerstyle only, please; I have taste).

Not a fan of Gaga but not hatin' either. She has a place in this wide open music world but it ain't Funk!

Hi. My name is JD and I'm a funkaholic. I have been since the seventies. I have played in a lot of bands and a lot of different styles. No matter what song or style I'm playing, a little bit of funk always finds it's way into the groove.
haha i like this thread glad i made it. I have always thought funk bazz should be 90% fingerstlye and 10% slap. IMO slap is a rare treat like when you give dogs when they do something good i.e eat your homework, Bite your boss when he comes over for dinner , and when you go to the dog park go up to some really foxxy ladies
I lol'd. I confess to liking a little Gaga now and then, but she is definitely in disco land.
I was in D.C. a couple of years ago and caught Chuck Brown, Rare Essence, E.U. and Back Yard Band doing their thing. Some of the funkiest stuff I'd ever heard. Funk definitely never left, it was just pushed further back into the closet of what isn't popular.
I'm going to say funk as a major influence in music is coming back, at least in my local area. There are some legitimate funk bands around Columbus and a lot of interesting funk fusions. A couple of bands are funk-punk fusions, others funk-rock, and one is a funk-rap fusion that works very very well. I've been trying really hard to put together a funk-rock jam group among the many talented musicians from my work and see where it goes.
Well, it never "left" - but it's really rebounding in popularity. Clubs are even giving gigs to funk bands in LA and even here in SD recently - - I've been working with not one but three different groups of folks - either subbing, putting something together or finalizing a set list. Clubs are FINALLY getting tired of classic rock... THANK GOD!
