Is G&L wiring deliberately sloppy?

General question for anyone...

Is the series OMG sound noticeably different than a regular series sound, or are they just two subtle flavors of each other?

I've never used an OMG circuit.
Yes, they are notably different. Series has a mid-forward tone with a slightly subdued top end. OMG basically attenuates the treble of ONE of the Series coils (like rolling the tone off a single coil) via, in G&L's case, a .1uF cap. This allows the top end of the other coils to break free, while keeping the mid-forward tone and output. Kind of like Single-coil on Steroids.
I've mentioned, perhaps in another thread, that my L2500 came wired with Parallel and OMG only. I started messing with a lot of Jazz basses and preferred the tone of true Single Coils and eventually removed the capacitors from my OMG wiring, and it basically gave me what I was looking for.

I asked because it crossed my mind to remove the OMG Select Switch and replace it with a variable resistor (pot with one end disconnected) connected in series with the OMG cap. Rotated fully one way gives regular series. Rotated fully the other way gives full OMG. Of course, in between settings gives a variable mix of both.

I drew it up, in case anyone's interested. Series/Single/Parallel with adjustable OMG. A no-load cut can be added on the Series end of the pot. When turned to Series position, the pot and cap get entirely removed from the coil. :

... But I drew up a circuit that uses a 3 position toggle for parallel, single coil, series. Then added a push/pull pot's switch inline with the OMG cap so you can toggle the cap in or out of the series circuit. In other words, while in series, you can choose regular series or OMG. When circuit in single coil or parallel, OMG is disabled.

So, I don't know if this is exactly what you want, but I think it's a neat idea.:

Wow, @fig , this is amazing (to me) ! I have the wiring almost done (attached). I had to deviate a bit because I didn't have a .1uf cap so I used a .047f cap instead (at least for now).
I assume that the coil select (a) goes out to the Active/Passive switch, where the active position send the signal through the Pre-amp ?
