Is Genz Benz Neox-112T mismatched with Shuttle 6.0?

When I sent the old speaker back to GB for test/replacement, I also ordered a brand new NeoX-112T from Musician's Friend. I wanted a pair, so it made sense to get it sooner than later. The new cab arrived, I eagerly plugged it in (at low volume!), and -- alas -- discovered the new cab was buzzing exactly like the old one did! Oh No! I was not amused and immediately called GenzBenz for help. I pleasantly told the receptionist what happened and she placed me on hold. A few seconds later Jeff Genzler came online and asked what was up. I quickly told him the saga and he said it was curious this would happen twice in a row. They had received my first speaker and he said it seemed to be working just fine. He asked if the wires in the old cab were tied together or flapping loose inside. As you recall from my photos (esp. the one below), the wires were loose. He suspected the loose wires were resting against the speaker cones, which would cause the buzzing. He suggested sending me new cabs, but mentioned there'd be a slight delay because they'd have to build them for me. I said I'd be comfortable connecting the wires and installing new speakers in the cabs at my house, so he shipped me new speakers overnight along with ties for the wiring. Sure enough, all wires were loose in both cabs. I used plastic ties to hold the excess back (see new photo, below). I then installed the speakers and replaced the grills. Both speakers now perform with perfection--I'm so pleased with the tone! Apparently the culprit was someone on the GB assembly line who did not tie the speaker wires together. It's a minor mistake that caused me some grief, lost time and a little money. But I also learned GB cares deeply about solving performance glitches in their gear and is willing to spend cash to make sure a musical nobody like me is happy with the gear. That says a lot about their commitment to quality. Thanks GB!

The dual 112s are great! I've always loved the sound of two cabinets coupled together. Rich, full, powerful sound! The 112 also sounds terrific by itself, which was especially pleasing as I can now bring just one speaker and do fine if the situation so warrants.

I just completed a short EQ/recording project of the Shuttle 6.0 and a NEOX-112T described here:

Well that certainly was an interesting story.Just think if you would have called the guy a crook and had a long running exchange of threatening e-mails going back and forth. I sold a fellow TB'er an Epifani cab that worked perfectly when I shipped it to him and mysteriously it developed a buzz when he got it. Both of us were fighting the reflex to call each other names ;) and we worked out what I thought was a fair solution though frustrating for both of us. I have the speaker back and have yet to have it tested. Now I wonder if something as simple a loose wire vibrating on the speaker could have been the issue. Amazing story and a lesson in many ways.

Hey guys...I'm having the EXACT same issue...it was working beautifully when I first got it...I ran all over town bragging about it to all my bass playing friends, and the first time I let someone sit in with us and try it out, it started buzzing really bad on low notes. I immediately took it into the store where I bought it, and of course it was fine. The next 2 gigs..it was horrible...sounded like the speaker was blown on anything lower than a standard "A"....I removed the grille and checked every screw on the cab...everything was tight (very well built, by the way...workmanship is GREAT)...anyway, i called GB today and spoke with someone named Chris...very cool...but he said nobody had heard of any problems like this...:hmm: He said that I would probably have to ship the speaker back and let them test it and if it's defective, they'll ship me a new one. I explained that it was my only bass amp and that i have gigs....he said he would see what he could do to help me out. I guess in the meantime, I will take the speaker out and check on the speaker leads...I just don't see how flapping wires could make the speaker sound that bad...but hey, I've seen some crazy things in my life. I'll keep you guys updated....If this is what it turns out to be, I think maybe GB could post that on their website in the support database....??? Otherwise, I am totally blown away by this product and plan on ordering an additional cab for larger rooms.

Sounds like a short-term quality control issue that I'm sure will be corrected in short order. It's comforting to see the response of GENZ BENZ here on the forum.
I've used a GBE 600 Bass head for some time, and it's rock solid and sounds great. Very flexible.
Situations like this can be a real headache; but its good to see GENZ BENZ has your back.
Thanks guys.

I read this thread with interest because my Ampeg PortaBass 1x10 is doing this to me. I've been all over the cabinet.

Post #9 of this thread by lbwdog is very thorough and has given me a list of things to try. Thanks for that!

Anyway, it can happen with any cabinet. Good luck finding your rattle.

It's not a GB issue. I've had these buzzing anomolies on all kinds of speaker cabinets from different vendors. Like Dennis said, things just rattle loose sometimes, or they have to "settle in" a bit.

As for the wires, it's not that they are flapping. It's that sometimes they might not be bound up correctly so that they touch the speaker cone, which causes a really nasty sound.

Again, this just comes and goes. You have to decide if it's really a speaker issue or just a temporary anomoly. My Schroeder 15+ cabinet was doing it last week where it sits at a rehearsal space. Not loud enough to notice while playing with others, but could hear it solo. I loaded it up to take it to a gig, and when I got it there, no buzzing. Just disappeared and hasn't come back since. Something shifted a bit in transport and now it's gone. I plan to take the grill off and double check all the screws soon as Dennis has mentioned. They can work their way out sometimes.

I know many people recommend not doing this, but I've done it for a long time without any issue. I put a single drop of Loctite on the screw when I tighten down my speakers. It keeps them from backing out from all the vibration, and I've never had an issue breaking that seal if I want to remove it myself. Just don't put too much on there if you go that route.
