Is it just me or does anyone else hate this line?

People bring that line up ALL THE TIME. It doesn't bother me.

It bothers me when they're disappointed that I didn't think it was hilarious. I don't know why, but non-bassists seem to think that we bass players should be finding that scene to be the funniest ever. Sorry, babe, I'm too close to the source. Too many weird references to make it anything related to real life, that the character has either never picked up the bass or is utterly insane.

When ur playing a gig and some guy or girl in the audience walks up to you and "slapping the bass man." or someone sees u with your bass and says it does it ever get old to y'all or is this just me. Yea it was cool for the first 1000 times i heard it but no its gotten kinda old. Anyone else with me?

I haven't had that said to me. What was said and irked me to no end......I was at my favorite music store, minding my own business and was trying out a bass at a low volume. I'd been at it for a while when this kid (I'm guessing he was 20) says "I can tell by the way you play that you don't slap." It's not so much what he said but how he said it. Rather antagonistic. I said "and?" He says, "well, well, I can tell that you don't!" (???) Again I said "and?" At that point he knew he tee'd me right off and tried to get on my good side. "But you're good man, don't get me wrong! Could you show me that one thing you did?" I did.

Kids. :rollno:

But at church I was told I play a mean bass.

I get the line occassionally but I just let ot ride past...and then the other one thinks "oh,yeah, this guy probably isn't sitting around watching chick flicks."
The "more cowbell" line bugs me because it's always delivered so badly. Nobody in the skit yelled "MORE COWBELL!!!!" as if they were in a busy short order grill. That wasn't why the skit was funny.

I don't slap the bass much either it wouldn't bother me as much if i was no where hear slapping the bass and the guy on he front row yells "slapping dabass mon" and i just kinda give him that look like did u really just say that and im not even slapping the bass

god yes... I had a friend who used to say it all the time, then I saw that movie. I told her to stop. Geddy Lee doesn't slap the bass, any real Rush fan knows that.

Just a comment, when Paul Rudd's character does the "Slappa Da BAAAAAASS Mahn" bit, he isn't talking about Rush yet (that happens later in the same scene).

It's pretty much like this:

Girlfriend: "You play Bass? What? I never knew that"
Paul Rudd: "Ya, I never told you that? I slappa tha bass big time"
GF: "What was that? You sound like a leprechaun"
etc.

later in the scene he mentions that him and Jason Segal jam out and play Rush songs.
To which she replies "Rush? What is that? Like, fast-paced rock?"

Just an FYI.
And yes I've seen that movie a million times.
And yes that line does get old.

My least favorite lines, when playing out:

1. "You SUCK!"

2. "You owe me money!"

3. "You are hereby served this summons."

4. "You rock! For an old guy."

5. "I think I might have given you VD."

7. "You can't count!"

8. "Any last words?"

9. "You rock!" (and then the person vomits on me)

10. "You rock!" and then the person spills beer on my monitor.

All of these are a lot worse than "slappin' the bass, mon," which I guess is mildly annoying, but sometimes we need perspective.

I guess it can be fun to complain for some people, but honestly you guys are complaining about people who come to watch you perform at your live gigs.

Ungrateful much?!

You're there to entertain THEM (not yourselves) and if its fun for them to spit out stupid cliches and think they look clever doing it, who cares? Just do your job. They aren't there to make you feel better; you're there to make them feel better.

I get that line, I HATE IT! especially the drunk guys that think if they keep on saying it you're going to laugh or do something other than look at them like they're an idiot...

It's up there with one of the summers betweens years in post secondary, I washed cars at a volkswagon dealership with really fresh dark black asphalt, me in my navy blue polyester volkswagon uniform (long pants and a little too small for me) in Vernon BC where it's often 40 degrees Celcius (104F) I washed every car on that lot from one end to the other about three times in a week, by the end of everyday I was so sick of the heat I wanted to puke... trying to force a polite smile for every customer that joked "Is my car next?" (three or four times a day) became very very difficult.... Come to think about it... I should have just sprayed them with my hose.
