Randy is the bassist for Pina Colada Deathpunks. A local '70's classic rock cover band.
Randy decides to skip Friday's gig to go on a date with Sheila.
Steve is the sub Randy got to fill in for the gig. Interestingly, Steve has never heard the song "Freebird"
Friday comes and Pina Colada Deathpunks are rocking the house.
at 10:26, Gary, a drunk in the audience yells "FRREEEEEEEEEEBIIIIIIIIRRRRD!"
Freebird was not on the set list. Steve panics and looks at the guitarist as the song starts.
The guitarist tells him G,C, and D. But Steve misheard him and played B by mistake.
Gary, the Skynrd fan, yells "NOOOOOOOOOO!" and throws his arms up knocking over a waitresses tray.
The tray, full of drinks, falls on Paul, a local cabbie, who never drinks, but loves the band.
On the way home, Paul is stopped at a seat belt checkpoint the police have setup.
Francis, a rookie police officer smells alcohol from Paul's shirt and arrests him on the spot.
Paul spends the night in jail and cannot phone his lawyer until morning.
John, a surgeon, gets an emergency page to board a flight to Singapore at 8:15AM
Peter, John's son arrives in a tow truck pulling his dad's SUV which he wrecked last night.
Danny, who runs the local taxi takes John's call and dispatches Paul to pick him up.
Paul is not in his taxi.
Danny hears a "10-4" over the radio, but sadly the voice that he hears is in his own head.
Years of running a taxi service has made Danny schizophrenic, and this was his first audible hallucination.
John misses his flight.
At 8:16 flight 1230 to Singapore departs on schedule.
Constance, one of the flight attendants, serves a pack of peanuts and a coke to Billy, a 10 year old kid.
Billy struggles to open his pack of peanuts and accidentally rips the whole package sending peanuts everywhere.
Eunice, an elderly lady who is taking her meds does not notice the peanut flying into her cup of pills.
Eunice is allergic to peanuts and her throat swells shut around some food during her in flight snack.
Constance yells out for a doctor, but there is none on board.
Meanwhile, John is booking a different flight to Singapore.
Constance alerts the pilot, Reginald, who served in the war.
Reginald knows exactly what to do, but can't leave the cockpit without a copilot.
Larry, the co-pilot, is joining the mile-high club with Candice, another stewardess.
Reginald pages Larry.
Reginald notes the weather is perfect and the air is smooth.
Reginald pages Larry.
Reginald remembers what his mother told him right before she died.
Reginald pages Larry.
She told him that every life is precious, and he should never have gone to war.
Reginald pages Larry
Candice says "Larry!"
Reginald remembers mom telling him he should have been a doctor instead.
Reginald pages "Larry"
Candice yells "Larry!"
Reginald remembers assisting a surgeon perform a simple tracheotomy in battle.
Reginald pages Larry
Candice screams "Oh Larry, Larry, LARRY, LARRY!!!"
Constance informs the pilot the woman's name was Eunice
Eunice was also Reginald's mother's name.
Reginald puts the plane on autopilot and breaks protocol by leaving the cockpit unmanned
Eunice is saved by an emergency tracheotomy.
An eagle flies into the left engine.
The plane lurches and the door to the cockpit slams shut.
... and locks.
Sheila greets her co-workers with a smile as she settles in behind her desk.
Timothy, her co-anchor say's my you are looking happy today. Good night last night?
Sheila smirks while focusing in to read the teleprompter.

And 3, 2, 1.....

"Good Evening. Our top story tonight: Thousands dead this morning in Singapore as flight 1230 collided into the United Overseas Bank Plaza One building killing all 63 people on board, toppling the skyscraper which fell sideways into 3 other blocks of buildings in the downtown area. Details are unclear as to what may have caused the crash, but it is suspected to be an act of terrorism.

The United States Homeland Security Advisory System has raised it's threat level to Orange."

TL : DR - Thousands of people could die if you miss a gig or don't know how to play Freebird.

If you seperate that into paragraphs I'll read it. :)

Copping out on a booked show is only acceptable if you're replaceable. Otherwise there is no question that you're letting your act down.

+1

And if YOU are the one that has to take the time to find a replacement and make sure he knows the material and all of the details about the gig.

You should not cause extra work or grief for your other band members or jeopardize the reputation of your band.

This is no different than taking the day off from work to go to the beach. I'm not going to do this if there's a deadline at work and there's no one to replace what I do and if it's going to impose unfair hardships on my other coworkers.

Sometimes it's OK to take unscheduled time off from work and sometimes it's not.

If you've ever been a boss at work or a band leader and had to try to cover for someone with a lax attitude about attendance, this would all be self-explanatory.

OK, I want someone to sub for me.

You will be singing lead on around 1/2 the songs. On about 1/3 or so, you will be playing bass. On about 1/5 of the songs, you will need a 12 string acoustic guitar. Oh, and bring Blues Harps in the keys of G, A, and D. And you will need a keyboard/synth to play "Rocky Mountain Way," "Don't Let me Down," and several other songs. Don't forget your percussion instruments.

You will have a lot of material to learn, and you will need to bring a PA, because you're NOT using mine.

Good luck, and let me know how the show went.

I'm not saying I'm irreplaceable; I'm just saying without me, it's a MUCH DIFFERENT BAND.

Um... I don't think you can sub for the band leader.. Unless he or she just sings the standard rep..
I've done it on several occasions. I'll usually switch over to rhythm guitar (his spot) and invite an old friend to play bass, sometimes the previous bass player sits in. The only guy in the band I can't fill in for is the drummer. Me and drums? It ain't pretty.

Um... I don't think you can sub for the band leader.. Unless he or she just sings the standard rep..

Sure you can. I'm in a band with two singer/guitarists who both sing in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Replacing both of them for 5 straight weeks of a weekly gig was very doable, though the band was a bit different with mostly songs in English. One of those weeks the drummer went to the Balkans, too, so it was all subs except for me.

I think the people who get all nuts about people flaking on a gig are talking about someone bailing the night of, or when it's not possible to simply get a sub. And I'm right there with em, as I wouldn't want to play with anyone who I'd know would do that. Unless there was truly good reason.

When someone bails on a gig and can't be replaced that means they're totally disregarding all the other band members, the reputation of the band, and the workers of the club/bar they're playing. If someone does that just cuz they found something better to do, then you can play with with those kind of people in your band. I wouldn't in mine.

This!

This.

For most cover groups this isn't a problem. In my mind, the issue of this is mostly with original bands.

This is the most brilliant thing I've ever read in all of talkbass. Too bad it's too long to sig

I guess I disagree with the original poster. I am not saying there are not good excuses to miss a gig, but if you would rather go to the beach, then I don't want to be in a band with you. Sure it's not life or death, but since being in a band is a team effort, you have to commit to the team.

Most people who are really into music, even in amateur bands, put it as a priority to be responsible when it comes to their position in that band. Even though I don't make a living making music, I have spent a good part of my life working to become the best musician I can be. I like to play with people with a similar mindset. If we had to cancel a gig because you wanted to go the the beach then I would be treating that as a lack of commitment. Having a sub available for emergencies or scheduled vacations is one thing, but if you are unreliable then your out.

I am not talking about being insane about it. If you said you were planning a trip with your friends or family in advance then sure, I wouldn't book a gig for that date. I don't expect people to show up after major surgery either hehe, but Bill Wyman played a Stones gig after breaking a finger, they talked about getting a sub, but he taped up his finger and played the gig.

I hear in this forum a lot of people talking about a lack of commitment from band members. If you are happy with playing with people that don't take it seriously, then that's fine. There are plenty of bands out there that just like the idea of being in a band, successful bands take it a bit more seriously. I am not saying ditch your day job, or neglect your family, but as a minimum you must honor your commitments to the band.
