I think any more with the state of the economy in some areas this is true. A few years ago bass players in my parts were hard to find now they are on local CL looking for gigs and to sub etc.
It is almost like you have to do 2 gigs to equal the pay one used to give you.
This is true. That's why I got into the circle I'm in. Figured out a long time ago that the lower paying gigs typically involve more work and more drama. Gigs paying $300 and up typically don't... everyone takes things seriously but that doesn't mean the gigs are grim as some seem to imagine, in fact I typically have more fun on them. Oftentimes they're almost too easy. A bonus is that I don't have to keep trying to find out why I haven't been paid yet.
