Is Modulus still in Business?

There's no excuse for any company acting in this manner, small or large company.
Well, there is one. That the company is being acquired, and the buyer's concerns about being stuck with engagements made by the previous management are such that that they've slapped a gag order on all customer contact and support. Modulus MAY be in that situation now, but it's hard to tell, given their legacy of erratic customer communications.

I'm a little puzzled by the undercurrent that speculation about what's going on is somehow bad. In the case of publicly traded companies, rumours are used to manipulate the stock price. But that's not the situation here. In the case of manufacturers of products that need ongoing production of replacement components that wear out, it can cut into sales and make a bad situation worse. But for every prospective Modulus buyer worried about not being able to get a defect fixed under warranty - it happens, but whatever we can say about their customer service, Modulus build quality has generally been very good - I'll wager there are several who are snapping up every Modulus in sight with an eye to the value going up if they stop production.

Above all, people like the OP who have a bass in their shop, and people who have deposits on account for basses on order, need to know what's going on and who they can talk to about getting their basses. If wild speculation on TB gets Modulus management, old or new, off their butts to reach out to these people a little sooner, so much the better.

I also live in Oakland but it seems kind of silly to drive up to Richmond just to try and look in the window of a building that may not even have windows.

I still remain doubtful that the company is closing but if restructuring means different owners then the concern should be whether the quality of the instruments suffers with the change not how often they answer the phone now or in the future.

It never ceases to amaze me how many guys on internet forums know how to run guitar making businesses better than the pros......I remember following the one about how much better it would be (for EBMM) if they made a 19 mm spacing 5 er - so they said yes......and 3 people ordered - and then everyone cried foul....but it wasn't because when EBMM offered a similar window on something people really wanted they got hundreds of orders.....such is the power of Talkbass!!

I feel very sorry for the people in this thread who are waiting for basses or work to be completed - the rest of the hot air merchants are doing nothing to help them and if criticism on internet forums was a barometer of whether a business failed or succeeded, will have certainly nailed a few more nails in the coffin of the manufacturer, to the potential detriment of their internet colleagues waiting for product....most helpful don't you think - NOT.

Fact is if I want to sound like Flea I'll still order a Modulus.

I just wish forums of this type were able to influence big musical instrument corporations (or the members spent as much time moaning about them in such a vociforous way). From what I've seen, individual CEOs and luthiers attract this sort of stuff on forums - sometimes for good reason, but most times because of a misplaced feeling of empowerment, and a lot of hot air directed at a named individual.

As someone mentioned earlier in the thread said, none of you guys are Flea - get over it - you won't get the same service (from anyone)

And someone else has clearly stated that MODULUS ARE STILL IN BUSINESS - so this thread is, beyond that somewhat worthless?

OI!
First off, I dig Modulus DESPITE Flea. I'm actually more of a Darryl Jenifer fan by far. Besides, I'm pretty sure Flea hasn't played a Modulus in years. Most bassists I know associate him with the Stingray more than any other axe. Last I saw he had a big old white Jazz bass?
Second, it's not weird that a lot of bassists have an opinion on how to run a business. We are by our nature middle men. We are neither the melody nor the rhythm, but the lynchpin between the caveman drummer and the narcissistic guitars. I think a lot of us find our forte is not so much generating ideas (whether they be songs or businesses) but in implementing the daylight out of others ideas.
Just saying is all.

I might give it a shot just because it's a nice day for driving.
I am also operating on the assumption that they may either be merging/bought out or are in receivership. In either case, the trucks would be showing up right about now. I know the companies that take care of these contingencies, in fact if they see me they will assume I am working "this project".

Might swing by point Isabel or the Albany landfill park on the way back.

Question would be whether they are still operating at all (right now) and if so, would they be working on a Saturday? I'm really curious what you'll find there - it may be a worthless effort, it may not be, but as close as you are, it's certainly worth a drive by (no pun intended for type of area it's located in ;) )

:scowl:
So what's the [cough] status on the OP's bass? Has anyone got ahold of Dr. Modulus? :hiding:

RCC,

I got a call from Modulus on Friday night, gave them my CC # for the neck repair and the bass shipped 30 minutes later.

The bass is on it's way to me, but I am not going to comment on anything else. I had a good chat with Modulus, but not my place to confirm or deny if they are still in business.

Cheers!

The sky is falling!
The sky is falling!

I'm happy for Clarence Leo Fender that he missed the age of the Internet.
I own a business. 95% of our cold leads are generated on Google Adwords.
If a potential customer hears one of my babies crying its guaranteed to end up in an online review. If you cough...if you don't have the exact product the customer wants. On their exact timetable.
Now I'm curious, and I'm going to spend 5 minutes looking for Modulus' online reviews. I guarantee that they have been panned, because the web is a place of poison often...
And I guarantee it's all anonymous (E.G. "wrestler372 gives this company one out of five stars".).

The instant information age is both a blessing and a curse.

You guys are ridiculous. I thought I was bad... I don't see any mention of Modulus being closed on Bass Central's site. This thread has gotten out of hand and I suggest the moderators delete it before you harm any future business for a decent company. Go through a dealer guys, and be patient! Modulus is a small company with a high demand. If anything this thread has made me reconsider selling mine!
