Is my amp being used when I'm not there?

Wow, leaving the basses would make me more nervous than leaving the amp! I'd bite the bullet and get a nice Mono Dual Bass Gig Bag and take the two basses wth me. That bag might be also be able to hold the amp head too. Although, that's probably going to be way more than you want to schlep back and forth to rehearsals.

There are few, and I mean FEW, people I would trust to handle my equipment with me standing right there. When I am nowhere to be found and I have no idea what they are doing, absolutely no way. Unless I was leaving some "beater basses" there with a backup rig, I wouldn't want someone touching them at all. The lock seems like a good idea if you don't want to tote any gear back and forth. Might want to buy some for the head and basses.

First: I am really picky about people using my stuff, especially my shiny, expensive bass equipment.

I used to haul all my gear to and from practice space and I definitely understand the hassle factor of doing so. I finally got sick of moving gear and decided to leave my stuff there as you have done. BUT I scanned the web for used equipment and got some junk gear for next to nothing that I wouldn't care about and left THAT gear there. If I was doing a gig, or felt so inclined I would trot out the good stuff, but for rehearsal/practice I could play it lazy and use my second string gear. If somebody wanted to use my old beat up Kustom Groove 600 ($80 on ebay) or my Joyo pedals (actually, also $80 on ebay) more power to them. The first day my band mates griped a little, but when they realized I had cut 20 minutes of setting up out of our practice time they quickly became okay with it.

The concern now is that let's say the guy is using your equipment because he doesn't want to bring his own, and he is not the nicest guy in the world. He shows up for practice, and sees he can't play, because you suddenly have locked the amp. You think he just MIGHT take it out on the equipment?

I used to have a shared practice space thing going on with my band and a couple others at the vocalist's old living space. We shared more or less everything, the bass cab was another guy's cabinet, guitar amps were from our guitarist, and the drums were also ours, the pa also beloved to another guy. Eventually things went sour and gear wasn't shared any more. Luckily good relations have been kept between everybody.

That said, I'd recommend just lugging your gear around, the bus sucks, but at least you'll know where your gear is.

Bring the amp with you. Should fit in a laptop bag. Easy to carry and no more wondering who's using it.

Go to an electrical supply store.
They make a lockout box that covers your male end plug.Snap it over your cord cap and put a pad lock on it and you are secure.I use these to keep defective electrical appliances from being used until I can remove them for repair.Cheap and effective ...No power..No Amp

One bass amp and 3 bands ? This had to be expected. Ask each band for $50.00, put up 50 of your own and go out and get a used Peavey TNT/TKO.

IMHO taking the head home defies the porpoise of having a rehearsal space, plus is a huge hassle for me: subway to work, subway to rehearsal and subway home… 2-3 days a week.


Tried the crazy EQ solution, but they might be being careful. Unless something smarter comes up, I might have to take the fuller’s unilock route… despite making me look like an arse….

Considering it is a shared space, and not dedicated, that could be a problem, not just use wise, but theft wise... I would find a way to secure that puppy down to something that won't move without damaging the building, That unilock is a great start to keep folks from plugging in to your gear, likewise, a quality cable lock to something permanent would be a good way to keep them from walking out the door with your gear...

You might find that if you stop them from plugging in at their convenience , they might just walk off with it to undo that lock and play it whenever at their own place... Just sayin's dishonest folks are that way from the ground up sometimes.

I wish I Could... plus a POG (Used by one of the bass players) into a 500W can easilly push the cab below it's 37hz resonance and waste the drivers in the barefaced supertwin... or they can set up the PF-500 gain too high and drive it into shut-down mode.

If you are worried about your gear, then you shouldnt leave it there.

If you are leaving equipment in shared space, then you have given them licence to use your gear. Lock it all up in some fashion, or take it home. Something like a heavy canvas cover with a locking strap that goes underneath could be a solution.

Absolutley 100% WRONG! just because something is there, doesn't given someone the right to use it. People should respect the property of others and not use anything that doesn't belong to them without permission.

Like I said, I dont disagree, but try telling that to people in shared practice spaces.
