And it is for that very reason I to this day wear cargo pants, anti-stat jacket and steel-toed shoes/boots! As you know- always have a way out (fire exit), know where the lockout(s) are, and ALWAYS keep the Variac within arm's reach!
The clothing won't protect me very much if an iron is going through it, but at least it will buy me a few extra seconds I would not have had! Can't say how many times some gear/tool has landed on my shoes either! Glad to have a ten fingers and all ten toes still attached and functioning (as well as my junk!).
BTW, I feel for the guy, but I'm sure he had it coming, based on your description! Ouch!
