I've had a lot of enjoyment from a $160 No-Name Starfire headless bass from ebay. With new Chromes and MUCH adjustment it's a fine sound when massaged through a Tech 21 Character Series VT into an amp. There are times when one doesn't want to risk "the good stuff" to the elements or environment.
My Hamer 5-string Cruise bass only cost me $300 used, and it ran for around $600 brand new, as far as Electric Basses go it feels like one of the most sturdy, basses I've ever held. There has been times when I've picked up $1000-$3000+ basses and imo they didn't hold a candle to my bass as far as feel was concerned. The price was right, so considering what I paid I'm really happy. I've had the bass for quite a few years now and the only thing I've needed to do is some small electircal stuff. Also I recently bought a Jerzey 4-string Acoustic/Electric for $200 which felt better to me then nearly every acoustic bass I've held over the last 3 years of my looking around at pawn shops and guitar stores.
Sound wise both fair fine, I'm sure that pickups could be replaced as well as the electronics but like I said the price was right and for those of us who $200.00 is a stretch sometimes its better to have a bass then no bass at all

Its all in the fingers and sometimes the amp.I have played other peoples cheap bass's and you know what?I can make a cheapie sing also.I just prefer better quality to less expensive,My experience with Dean is they are not bad at all I have owned the guitars and bass's and they in some circles get a bad rap.I traded 2 Ibanez and a Dean Sarasota at Sam Ash and they told me they dont take Dean,I invited him to try the trans red Sarasota so agreed it was sweet but Boss told him no Deans.I do not know why because they sell other bombs like Brownsville and carlo robelli and my Dean blew those bombs away so enjoy that Dean bass
Thanks, hope I'll figure out what's causing it, but I noticed something odd. I haven't tried to adjust the pickup yet but the side near the neck is lower than the other. I don't know if it's designed that way or adjusted that way. I always thought pickups were generally flat toward the strings but possibly raised toward the high or low strings depending on the tone desired. Still, I don't think the string hits it but maybe that's part of the issue.
